La Parades Commission (Commissione Parate) ha permesso la parata degli Apprentice Boys di sabato 5 dicembre. Passerà l’interfaccia di Crumlin Road ad Ardoyne, luogo di violenti scontri nel passato.
La decisione è stata criticata come “contro ogni logica e buon senso”, dopo che si è saputo della partecipazione della Shankill Star Flute Band, istituita in memoria del killera lealista della UVF Brian Robinson. La parata passerebbe vicino al luogo in cui Robinson sparò ad un cattolico nel 1989.
Uccise Patrick McKenna, di Ardoyne, lungo Crumlin Road prima di essere ucciso a sua volta dai soldati britannici.
Nel suo sito Internet, la Shankill Star scrive “For God and Ulster. In memory of Brian Robinson” (Per Dio e l’Ulster. In memoria di Brian Robinson).
Attaccando la decisione della Parades Commission, il parlamentare nazionalista dello SDLP per North Belfast, Alban Maginness, ha detto al News Letter: “Abbiamo già abbastanza (problemi) sul tavolo senza la disastrosa aggiunta di una parata degli Apprentice Boys.
“La Shankill Star commemora un assassino della UVF e la prova è nelle scritte sui loro tamburi”.
Ha aggiunto: “Nella sua decisione, la Commissione Parate dice che non dovrebbero essere mostrati simboli relativi a organizzazioni ritenute fuorilegge o a paramilitari. Come si combina questo con i tamburi degli Shankill Star?
“Ci sono altre bande che gli Apprentice Boys di Ballysillan avrebbero potuto inserire ed è incredibile come la commissione abbia accettato l’argomentazione secondo la quale la banda Shankill Star fosse stata scelta per la «musicalità»”.
Per Maginness permettere la parata di sabato sarebbe stata “una decisione sbagliata” in qualsiasi occasione ma ha aggiunto: “Proprio ora, con lo stallo politico e la minaccia di scioglimento (dell’Assemblea), con il tentativo lealista di appropriarsi del centro di Portadown, arriverà direttamente nelle mani dei dissidenti repubblicani che attendono ansiosi”.
Il parlamentare dice che il suo partito vuole ottenere un’urgente riesame della “folle decisione” presa dalla Parades Commission.
Nelle sue regole sulla parata degli Apprentice Boys, la commissione “ha riconosciuto le tensioni” intorno all’evento, ma ha accettato lo scopo della marcia, ossia “dare espressione pubblica alla cultura ed alla storia”.
La commissione ha imposto condizioni alla marcia, per cui quando verrà attraversata la zona di interfaccia potrà suonare solamente un tamburo, potranno essere accompagnati da sole 15 persone e non dovranno essere mostrati simboli paramilitari.

Parade decision ‘must be reversed’
The Parades Commission is to allow an Apprentice Boys parade on Saturday, which will pass the Crumlin Road interface at Ardoyne, the scene of violent clashes in the past.
The decision has been criticised as “defying logic and common sense” after it emerged the Shankill Star Flute Band, which commemorates UVF killer Brian Robinson, will march near the spot where he shot a Catholic man in 1989.
Robinson killed Ardoyne man Patrick McKenna on the Crumlin Road before being shot and killed himself by undercover soldiers.
On its website, the flute band states its tagline as “For God and Ulster. In memory of Brian Robinson”.
Slamming the Parades Commission’s decision, SDLP MLA for North Belfast Alban Maginness told the News Letter: “We have enough on our plate without this disastrous addition to an Apprentice Boys parade.
“The Shankill Star band commemorates a UVF murderer and the evidence is right there on their logo on the side of their drum.”
He added: “In its determination, the Parades Commission says there should be no display of symbols relating to a proscribed organisation or paramilitary member. How do they square this with the Shankill Star drums?
“There are other bands that the Ballysillan Apprentice Boys could have included and it is beyond belief that the commission bought the argument that the Shankill Star band was chosen for its ‘musicality'”.
Mr Maginness said allowing Saturday’s parade would have been a “bad decision” at any time but added: “Right now, with political stalemate and the threat of meltdown, with attempts at mob rule in Portadown, it will play straight into the hands of republican dissidents waiting eagerly in the wings.”
The MLA said his party would seek an urgent review of the Parades Commission’s “foolish decision”.
In its determinations on the Apprentice Boys parade, the commission said it “recognised the tensions” surrounding the event, but accepted the purpose of the march was “to give public expression to culture and history”.
The commission has placed conditions on the parade, stating there must be no music other than a single drum beat as the band passes the interface, parade supporters should not exceed 15 persons and there must be no paramilitary displays.
