Il tentativo di intitolare una strada di North Belfast in memoria delle 15 vittime di una bomba lealista è di nuovo nell’agenda del Consiglio Comunale, nonostante l’opposizione degli unionisti
La proposta è stata approvata nel comitato del Belfast City Council, anche se con un voto non unanime.
Il consigliere DUP Brian Kingston si oppone alla scelta. “È questo il percorso che vogliamo intraprendere? Rinominando le strade di Belfast dopo le atrocità dei Troubles?”, ha chiesto il politico unionista.
“Questo potrebbe essere un precedente pericoloso. CI arriverebbero una serie di richieste simili”.
La questione verrà analizzata durante una riunione del Consiglio il prossimo 1 maggio.
È la seconda volta che il Consiglio si trova a deliberare sulla modifica del nome di Fishers Court.
Un anno fa gli unionisti riuscirono ad obbligare al mantenimento del nome esistente.
Adesso i residenti hanno firmato una petizione a favore del cambiamento del nome della strada in McGurks Way. Il bar, fatto esplodere dai paramilitari lealisti, si trovava proprio di fronte alla strada.
Nell’esplosione morirono 15 civili cattolici.
Frank Dempsey del St Patrick’s and St Joseph’s Housing Committee afferma: “Non stiamo parlando di ricordare degli atti di terrorismo.
“Vogliamo onorare delle vittime innocenti. Dov’è il problema in questo?”.
La modifica del nome sarebbe sostenuta dai consiglieri dello Sinn Fein, SDLP e Alliance Party. Ad opporsi l’intero gruppo di consiglieri unionisti.

McGurk’s bar street name back on Belfast agenda
An attempt to name a north Belfast street in memory of 15 people killed in a loyalist bombing is back on the agenda, despite unionist opposition.
The move was passed by a Belfast City Council committee, but on a split vote.
DUP councillor Brian Kingston opposed it. “Is this the route we want to go down, renaming streets in Belfast after atrocities of the Troubles?”, he asked.
“This would set a dangerous precedent. We would end up with a whole series of such applications.”
The issue will be considered at a full meeting of the council on 1 May.
It is the second time the council has considered the name change.
A year ago, unionists forced through the existing street name.
However, since then residents have signed a petition in favour of the name McGurks Way, which is across the road from the scene of the bombing.
Frank Dempsey of St Patrick’s and St Joseph’s Housing Committee said: “We are not talking about remembering acts of terrorism.
“We are about honouring innocent victims. What is the harm in that?”
Unionists said the name change has the backing of Sinn Fein, the SDLP and Alliance.
Fifteen Catholic civilians died in the bombing.
