Agli investigatori sono state concesse 72 ore per interrogare il prominente repubblicano Colin Duffy
Il quarantaseienne di Lurgan è in custodia in carcere, accusato di appartenenza all’IRA e di complotto per uccidere membri delle forze di sicurezza.
Ma martedì la polizia si è recata al tribunale di Belfast per chiedere di rilasciarlo, per poterlo interrogare nuovamente su argomenti separati.
Rasato, vestito con giubbotto grigio e camicia, Colin Duffy è rimasto con le mani in tasca per tutto il procedimento.
Un agente di polizia ha confermato che la PSNI lo intende interrogare.
Non sono stati forniti ulteriori dettagli sugli argomenti dei nuovi interrogatori.
Colin Duffy si trova in carcere dopo essere stato arrestato lo scorso dicembre insieme ad Alex McCrory, 52 anni di Belfast, e Henry Joseph Fitzsimons, 45 anni.
Le accuse contro i tre repubblicani sono legate ad un attacco armato contro veicoli della polizia che percorrevano Crumlin Road a North Belfast.
Tutti sono accusati di cospirazione all’omicidio e di appartenenza all’Irish Republican Army.
Colin Duffy è anche accusato di cospirazione al possesso di armi da fuoco ed esplosivi con l’intento di mettere in pericolo vite umane.
Un avvocato difensore ha chiesto conferma che la richiesta della polizia non fosse collegata ai presunti reati e operazioni per le quali Colin Duffy al momento è in custodia.
L’investigatore ha replicato: “Le questioni che vogliamo sottoporgli sono differenti”.
La giudice distrettuale Fiona Bagnall ha acconsentito al rilascio di Colin Duffy in custodia alla polizia per un massimo di 72 ore.

Police given three days to question dissident Colin Duffy
Detectives were granted court permission on Tuesday to question high-profile dissident republican Colin Duffy for up to 72 hours.
The 46-year-old is in custody accused of IRA membership and plotting to murder security force members.
But police went before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday seeking his release to carry out new interviews about separate matters.
Duffy, of Forest Glade in Lurgan, Co Armagh, was led into the dock to hear the application.
Clean-shaved and wearing a grey coat and shirt, he stood with hands in his pockets throughout proceedings.
A detective constable confirmed police wanted him for questioning.
No further details were disclosed on what is to be put to him during the interview sessions.
Duffy has been held since his arrest last December along with Alex McCrory, 52, of Sliabh Dubh View, Belfast and 45-year-old Henry Joseph Fitzsimons, of no fixed address.
Charges were brought against them in connection with a gun attack on police vehicles travelling along the Crumlin Road in north Belfast.
All three are jointly accused of conspiring to murder and belonging to a proscribed organisation – namely the Irish Republican Army.
Duffy is also accused of conspiracy to possess firearms and explosives with intent to endanger life.
A defence solicitor asked for confirmation that the police application was not linked to the alleged offences and operation for which his client is currently on remand.
The detective replied: “The matters we wish to question him about are separate.”
District Judge Fiona Bagnall agreed to let Duffy be released into police custody for up to three days.
