Colpevoli per possesso di mortaio

Tre uomini hanno ammesso il possesso un mortaio artigianale, ritrovato due anni fa vicino a Lurgan, Contea di Armagh

Un mortaio, completo di tubo di lancio, era stato ritrovato vicino a Cornakinnegar Road il 5 aprile 2007.

Damien McKenna, 26 anni di Deans Walk, Gary Toman, 24 anni di Drumnahoe Avenue e Sean McConville, 23 anni di Killwilkie Road, tutti a Lurgan, hanno fatto appello presso il Belfast Crown Court.

La polizia ha detto che l’attacco pianificato era “una disgustosa cospirazione per uccidere” con una “insensibile mancanza di considerazione” per la comunità.

“Non ci sono dubbi che se non fosse stato ritrovato, i criminali terroristi avrebbero cercato di compiere un attacco contro il personale delle forze di sicurezza”, ha detto l’ispettore capo David McConville.

“E’ altamente probabile che i civili avrebbero potuto essere uccisi o gravemente feriti”.

Trio guilty of possessing mortar

Three men have admitted possessing an improvised mortar bomb found two years ago near Lurgan, County Armagh.

A live mortar, complete with launching tube, was found near the Cornakinnegar Road on 5 April 2007.

Damien McKenna, 26, Deans Walk, Gary Toman, 24, Drumnahoe Avenue and Sean McConville, 23, Killwilkie Road, all in Lurgan, pleaded at Belfast Crown Court.

Police said the planned attack was “a disgusting conspiracy to murder” with a “callous disregard” for the community.

“There is no doubt that if it had not been found, terrorist criminals would have attempted to carry out a vicious attack on security force personnel,” said Detective Chief Inspector David McConville.

“It is also highly likely that a member of the public could have been killed or severely injured.”
