Una salva di proiettili è stata esplosa nel Bogside, sopra alla bara di un repubblicano a Cable Street nella serata di martedì.
Tre uomini a volto coperto hanno sparato alcuni colpi sul feretro, avvolto nella bandiera tricolore irlandese, di Jim Gallagher, morto improvvisamente nei giorni scorsi.
Gallagher fu internato negli anni Settanta e recentemente era entrato nel Republican Network for Unity.
I colpi sono stati esplosi quando i resti di Gallagher sono ritornati nella sua casa, poco dopo le 18 di martedì. La bara si trovava fuori dalla casa dell’uomo e tre uomini a volto coperto sono comparsi da un vicolo vicino e hanno assunto la posizione di sparo, prima di far partire numerosi proiettili dalle loro pistole.
Una folla si era raccolta nella strada per il ritorno del feretro di Gallagher. Hanno applaudito quando la salva di proiettili è stata esplosa. Gli uomini armati si sono allontanati sempre da un vicolo.
La Messa da Requiem per Gallagher sarà celebrata nella St Columba’s Church, Long Tower, giovedì mattina.

Shots fired over republican’s coffin
Masked gunmen fire a volley of shots over the coffin of Bogside republican Jim Gallagher on Tuesday evening.
A volley of shots was fired over the coffin of a republican in Cable Street on Tuesday evening.
Three masked gunmen fired a number of shots over the Tricolour-draped coffin of Bogside man, Jim Gallagher, who died suddenly at his home earlier this week.
Mr Gallagher was interned in the 1970s and had recently been involved with the Republican Network for Unity.
The shots were fired as Mr Gallagher’s remains were brought back to his home shortly after 6pm on Tuesday evening. The coffin was placed on trestles outside the man’s home and the three gunmen appeared from a nearby alleyway and took up firing positions before firing a number of shots from handguns.
A crowd had gathered in the street for the return of Mr Gallagher’s remains and applauded when the masked men fired the shots. The gunmen then made their escape using the alleyway.
Mr. Gallagher’s Requiem Mass will be celebrated in St Columba’s Church, Long Tower, on Thursday morning.
