Risposta IRSP ai documenti di Downing Street

IRSP ritiene che quei doucmenti di Downing Street, ad un valore nominale, sembrano appoggiare Richard O’Rawe nelle accuse fatte a proposito di questo cruciale periodo dello sciopero della fame (Hunger Strike). Quelle lettere provenienti dal numero 10 di Downing Street, scritte in contemporanea, sicuramente contraddicono la versione del Provisional Sinn Fein sui fatti di quel periodo. L’IRSP ha investigato le stesse accuse contenute in quei documenti per diverso tempo e renderà pubbliche le proprie conclusioni dopo aver esaminato le prove nella loro totalità.

Negli ultimi giorni l’IRSP ha parlato con i parenti dei tre martiri dell’INLA, ex appartenenti all’Army Council dell’INLA che sono stati coinvolti nello sciopero del 1981 ed anche con l’allora OC (Officer Commanding, ufficiale di comando) dei prigionieri INLA a proposito di questi particolari documenti. Tutti hanno dichiarato che non erano a conoscenza della “iniziativa sottobanco” o di un “accordo sul contenuto dell’offerta della Thatcher ma non dei toni utilizzati” dalla PIRA l’8 luglio 1981, come chiaramente indicano questi documenti.

Sia l’allora Army Council che l’OC dei prigionieri dell’INLA hanno comunicato all’IRSP che se fossero giunti a conoscenza del contenuto di questi sviluppi avrebbero ordinato ai prigionieri dell’INLA di cessare lo sciopero della fame.

Molte domande adesso stanno scaturendo da questi documenti cui solo il NIO, PSF, Mountain Climber(1) e Brendan Duddy(2) possono rispondere e perciò l’IRSP chiederà a tutti di mostrare tutti i documenti e le informazioni rivelanti del periodo in esame. L’IRSP, a nome di alcuni parenti degli hunger strikers, proveranno ad incontrare le parti in causa nell’immediato futuro.

Michael Devine Junior parlando questa mattina all’IRSP ha comunicato che “le famiglie chiedono e meritano la verità su ciò che è accaduto in questo periodo. Le ultime scoperte hanno aggiunto un peso sostanziale alle accuse precedenti secondo le quali le vite degli ultimi sei ragazzi potevano essere salvate. Mio padre ed i suoi cinque compagni sono morti perché a qualcuno non piacevano i toni della Thatcher malgrado accettasse il contenuto della sua offerta? Perché alle famiglie o ai prigionieri stessi non è mai stata riferita la natura ed il contenuto di questi contatti? Mi appello allo Sinn Fein ed al governo inglese, in base alla natura delle loro posizioni pubbliche su verità e riconciliazione, di dirci la verità”.

The IRSP believe that these Downing Street documents, at face value, appear to vindicate Richard O’Rawe in the claims he made in regards to this crucial period of the Hunger Strike. These confidential 10 Downing Street letters, which were written contemporaneous, certainly contradict PSF’s version of events from that period. The IRSP have been investigating similar claims that are contained in these documents for quite some time and will be making their conclusions public after examining the evidence in its totality.

Over the past number of days the IRSP has been speaking to relatives of the three INLA Hunger Strikers, ex-INLA Army Council members who were involved in the Strike at that time and also to the then OC of the INLA prisoners about these particular documents. All have stated that they were not aware of the ‘back-channel initiative’ or of an ‘acceptance of the content of Thatcher’s offer but not the tone’ by the PIRA in July 8th 1981 which these documents clearly indicate.

Both the then INLA Army Council and the INLA prisoners OC have stated to the IRSP that if they had have been made aware of the content of these developments at that time they would have ordered the INLA prisoners to end their hunger strike.

Many questions now arise from these documents which only the NIO, PSF, the Mountain Climber and Brendan Duddy can answer and therefore the IRSP would call on all these parties to reveal all the documentation and information that are relevant to this period. The IRSP, on behalf of some of the relatives of the Hunger Strikers, will be seeking meetings with the relevant parties in the very near future.

Michael Devine Junior speaking this morning to the IRSP has stated that -‘’the families demand and deserve the truth about what really happened during this period. These latest disclosures have added substantial weight to previous claims that the last six hunger strikers lives could have been saved. Did my Father and his five comrades die because a number of individuals didn’t like the tone of Thatcher despite accepting the content of her offer? Why were the families or the prisoners themselves never told about the nature and content of these contacts? I would appeal to SF and the British Government, given their public positions on truth and reconciliation, to tell us the truth and give us closure’’.
