Due consiglieri del DUP hanno lasciato il partito unionista perché “insoddisfatti della direzione presa dal loro partito”
La consigliera di Ballymena Deirdre Nelson lascia il DUP per far parte del Conservative Party.
La donna si ritiene insoddisfatta del partito dalla partenza di Ian Paisley.
La Nelson fu eletta quattro anni fa.
All’inizio del 2009 ha proposto la propria candidatura alle elezioni europee, ma è stata battuta da Diane Dodds.
Nella dichiarazione dove spiega la sua decisione di entrare nei Conservative dice di aver appoggiato gli sforzi del partito di allontanare il Nordirlanda dalle politiche settarie.
Il DUP risponde descrivendola come “uno scarto ed un’opportunista”, affermando che la sua mossa si può paragonare ad un raro caso di qualcuno che sale su una barca che sta affondando.
Lord Morrow, del DUP, ha descritto l’abbandono di Greenaway come deludente e ha detto che il partito sta rivedendo la propria posizione sul consiglio di Dungannon in base a quello che ha definito il “minimale apporto” di Greenaway.

‘Unhappy’ DUP councillors defect
Two DUP councillors have defected because they “are unhappy with the direction taken by their party”.
Ballymena councillor Deirdre Nelson said she was leaving the DUP to join the Conservative Party.
She said she was unhappy with her party since the departure of Ian Paisley Snr.
Councillor Nelson was elected four years ago.
Earlier this year she put her name forward for the party’s European candidacy, but lost out to Diane Dodds.
In the statement explaining her decision to join the Conservatives she said she backed the party’s efforts to steer Northern Ireland away from sectarian politics.
The DUP hit back describing her as “a reject and an opportunist”, claiming her move was a rare occurrence of someone joining a sinking ship.
The DUP’s Lord Morrow described the defection of councillor Greenaway as disappointing and claimed the party had been reviewing his position on Dungannon council due to what he called Mr Greenaway’s “minimal input.”
