Il comandante della polizia di North Belfast ha detto di sperare che l’allarme sicurezza in Antrim Road possa terminare entro giovedì sera
Quasi 50 famiglie hanno trascorso una seconda notte fuori casa.
Il Soprintendente Capo Mark Hamilton afferma che mettere in sicurezza la zona è “un procedimento lento, metodico e scrupoloso.
“Non avrei preso le decisioni messe in opera se non credessi ad un enorme rischio, in primo luogo per la popolazione e poi per il mio personale.
“Ci sono state persone in questa comunità che hanno deliberatamente lasciato una bomba in questa zona e il loro unico scopo era di uccidere persone.
“A questo aggiungete l’avventatezza di lasciare un ordigno in condizioni instabili che sarebbe potuto esplodere”.
Mercoledì il Soprintendente Hamilton ha riferito che gli agenti erano stati chiamati per un intervento al negozio Xtravision nella serata di domenica.
“Una delle linee di inchiesta è che forse questa bomba era stata lasciata lì domenica sera per quei poliziotti, per ucciderli mentre si recavano a compiere il loro lavoro”, ha affermato.
“La prima chiamata l’abbiamo ricevuta lunedì pomeriggio ed è stato circa 24 ore più tardi che abbiamo ottenuto informazioni sufficienti per portarci alla Xtravision, per cercare di andare avanti e cercare questa bomba e metterla in sicurezza”.
Un secondo oggetto trovato dalla polizia nella notte di mercoledì si crede di essere un componente di bomba e potrebbe essere stata parte della bomba originale.
La polizia ha detto che centinaia di persone avrebbero camminato a pochi passi dalla bomba.
L’allarme, lanciato nella zona vicino alla stazione di polizia di Antrim Road, è iniziato dopo una serie di chiamate che sembrano provenire da Oglaigh na hEireann.
Alcune famiglie evacuate dalle loro case sono state collocate presso la Fortwilliam and McCrory Presbyterian Church per la notte.
Il parlamentare SDLP Alban Maginness ha detto che i responsabili dell’attacco non hanno alcun sostegno dalla comunità locale.
“Le persone sono arrabbiate per quello che è successo e sono indignate per il fatto che questa bomba era rimasta lì per almeno 24 ore, se non di più”, ha affermato.
“Il suo scopo principale non era quello di distruggere una proprietà, ma di uccidere la gente e in particolare la polizia – che è un attacco a tutta la comunità”.
Circa 100 abitazioni ed esercizi commerciali sono stati evacuati. La strada è stata chiusa dalle 16:00 di martedì.

Alert continues after bomb found in north Belfast
The police commander in north Belfast has said he hopes the security alert on the Antrim Road will be over by Thursday evening at the latest.
About 50 families spent a second night out of their homes on Wednesday.
Chief Superintendent Mark Hamilton said making sure the area was safe was a “slow, methodical, painstaking process”.
“I wouldn’t have taken the steps I have taken if I didn’t believe there was an enormous risk, firstly to members of the public and then to my staff.
“There’s been people in this community who have deliberately planted a bomb in this area and their only purpose was to murder people.
“Then you add to that the recklessness of leaving a device in an unstable condition which could have exploded.”
On Wednesday, CH Supt Hamilton said police officers had been called to an Xtravision shop on Sunday night.
“One line of inquiry is that perhaps this bomb was in place on Sunday night for those police officers, to kill them as they went about their business,” he said.
“The first call we got was on Monday afternoon and it was some 24 hours later before we got sufficient information to bring us to the Xtravision, to try and go forward and search for this bomb and make it safe.”
A second object found by police on Wednesday night is believed to be a bomb component and may have been part of the original bomb.
Police have said hundreds of people would have walked past the bomb.
The alert, which is close to Antrim Road police station, began after a series of calls claiming to be from dissident republican group Oglaigh na hEireann.
Some families who were moved from their homes were put up at Fortwilliam and McCrory Presbyterian Church overnight.
SDLP assembly member Alban Maginness said those behind the attack had no support whatsoever in the local community.
“People are enraged by what has happened and they’re outraged by the fact this bomb had lain there for at least 24 hours if not longer,” he said
“Its main purpose was not to destroy property, but to kill people and kill police in particular – that is an attack on the whole community.”
Up to 100 homes and businesses have been evacuated. The road has been closed since 1600 GMT on Tuesday.
