Il gruppo repubblicano ha annunciato di aver compiuto l’incursione armata nell’hotel di Dublino di venerdì scorso, quando un uomo è stato ucciso e altri due sono rimasti feriti
La Continuity IRA (CIRA) ha anche detto di prevedere nuovi attacchi “contro spacciatori e criminali”.
La polizia irlandese afferma di “mantenere la mente aperta in relazione ai gruppi criminali coinvolti”.
Tre degli uomini armati indossavano uniformi simili a quelle del team SWAT della polizia ed erano armati con fucili d’assalto AK47.
La polizia ha anche detto che almeno sei persone sono state coinvolte nell’attacco avvenuto durante le operazioni di peso per un incontro di boxe.
I pugili Jamie Kavanagh e Antonio Joao Bento si stavano pesando in vista dell’incontro Clash of Clans.
L’incontro valido per il titolo europeo dei pesi leggeri della WBO (World Boxing Organisation) era previsto per sabato sera ma è stato rimandato.
David Byrne, 33 anni di Crumlin a South Dublin, è rimasto ucciso nella sparatoria avvenuta nella sala dell’Hotel Regency.
In una dichiarazione alla BBC, un uomo che affermava di parlare a nome della direzione della Continuity IRA ha detto che i membri del gruppo repubblicano sono responsabili dell’attacco.
Gruppo armato contrario al processo di pace e all’Accordo del Venerdì Santo, la Continuity IRA persegue l’unità dell’Irlanda. “Continuity” (Continuità, Ndt) si riferisce alla convinzione che il gruppo sta portando avanti la missione originaria dell’Irish Republican Army (IRA) di costringere gli inglesi ad abbandonare l’Irlanda.
Il portavoce della CIRA ha affermato che David Byrne stato preso di mira perché coinvolto nell’uccisione di Alan Ryan, avvenuta a Dublino quattro anni fa.
Alan Ryan, 32 anni, era un membro di spicco di un altro gruppo armato repubblicano, la Real IRA. È stato ucciso a settembre 2012.
All’epoca dell’omicidio fu riferito che la fazione di Ryan all’interno della Real IRA a Dublino era impegnata in una faida contro alcuni inportanti boss della malavita dublinese.
“Anche se non era un membro della nostra organizzazione, non abbiamo intenzione di stare fermi e permettere a spacciatori e criminali di colpire i repubblicani” ha detto il portavoce della Continuity IRA.
Non è un attacco isolato
L’uomo ha anche avvertito che sono stati pianificati ulteriori attacchi.
“Questo non sarà un attacco isolato”, ha detto.
“Unità della Continuity IRA sono state autorizzate ad effettuare ulteriori operazioni. Più spacciatori e criminali saranno presi di mira.
“La Continuity IRA compirà ulteriori operazioni militari.”
La polizia irlandese, An Garda Síochána, hanno istituito posti di blocco armati a Dublino per timore di rappresaglia per l’attacco.
Il portavoce della Conitnuity IRA che ha rivendicato l’azione chiamando la BBC ha fornito la parola in codice, ma non c’è modo di verificare la correttezza dell’informazione.
La natura dell’attacco, e in particolare l’uso di fucili d’assalto AK47, ricordano gli attacchi effettuati dalla Provisional IRA e dai gruppi repubblicani.
Ma fino ad ora la polizia irlandese ritiene che l’attacco sia il risultato di una faida tra le principali bande criminali.
Parlando lunedì dopo l’attacco, il presidente dello Sinn Féin Gerry Adams ha detto: “È stato un attacco sfrontato in pieno giorno fatto da teppisti criminali che credono di poter operare con impunità e al di sopra del normale stato di diritto.
“Dovrebbero essere rinchiusi (in carcere)”.
Gerry Adams ha aggiunto: “Apprendo che un gruppo che si fa chiamare Continuity IRA ha rivendicato la responsabilità per l’attacco al Regency Hotel.
“Non sono l’IRA. L’IRA si è sciolta e le loro armi sono state messe fuori uso”, ha concluso.

Dublin weigh-in murder: Continuity IRA claims murder of David Byrne
Dissident republicans have claimed they carried out a shooting in Dublin on Friday in which a man was killed and two others wounded.
The Continuity IRA (CIRA) said it also plans to carry out further attacks “on drug dealers and criminals”.
Irish police said they were “keeping an open mind in relation to the criminal groups involved”.
Three of the gunmen wore police-style SWAT team uniforms and were armed with AK47 assault rifles.
The police also said at least six people were involved in the attack at a weigh-in for a boxing match.
It came ahead of a Clash of the Clans boxing bout between Dubliner Jamie Kavanagh and Portuguese boxer Antonio Joao Bento.
The World Boxing Organization (WBO) European lightweight title fight was due to take place on Saturday night.
The man who died was David Byrne, 33, from Raleigh Square in Crumlin in the south of the city.
In a statement to the BBC, a man claiming to speak on behalf of the leadership of the Continuity IRA said its members were responsible.
A hard-line republican group, CIRA is violently opposed to any deal not based on a united Ireland. “Continuity” refers to the group’s belief that it is carrying on the original IRA mission to force Britain out of Ireland.
The CIRA spokesman claimed Mr Byrne was targeted because he had been involved in the killing of Alan Ryan in Dublin four years ago.
Ryan, 32, was a leading member of another dissident republican group, the Real IRA. He was shot dead in September 2012.
At the time it was reported that Ryan’s faction within the Real IRA in Dublin had been engaged in a feud with major gangland criminals.
“Although not a member of our organisation, we are not going to stand back and allow drug dealers and criminals to target republicans,” the CIRA spokesman said.
‘Not an isolated incident’
He also warned that further attacks were planned.
“This will not be an isolated incident,” he said.
“Continuity IRA units have been authorised to carry out further operations. More drug dealers and criminals will be targeted.
“The Continuity IRA will carry out further military operations.”
The Irish police, An Garda Síochána, have set up armed checkpoints in Dublin because of fears of retaliation for the attack.
The CIRA spokesman who issued the statement to the BBC provided a code word, but there is no way to independently verify this claim.
The nature of the attack, and in particular the use of AK47 assault rifles, are reminiscent of attacks carried out by the Provisional IRA and dissident republican groups.
But until now, the Garda have said they believe shooting was the result of a feud between major organised crime gangs.
Speaking on Monday after the attack, Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said: “It was a brazen attack in broad daylight by criminal thugs who believe they can operate with impunity and above the normal rule of law.
“They should be locked up, where they belong.”
Mr Adams added: “I understand a group calling itself the Continuity IRA has claimed responsibility for the attack at the Regency Hotel.
“They are not the IRA. The IRA are gone and their weapons are gone,” he said.
