Conversazioni repubblicane registrate da MI5

Le forze di sicurezza hanno registrato 190 ore di conversazioni fra tre repubblicani, è stato comunicato in tribunale

I tre uomini furono arrestati in un’azione rapida dell’MI5 per un presunto contrabbando di armi da parte dei repubblicani tra maggio 2005 e giugno 2006.

In tribunale erano presenti i due uomini di Lurgan Paul Anthony McCaugherty, 43 anni, Desmond Paul Kearns, 44 anni, e Dermot Declan Gregory, conosciuto come Michael Dermot, 41 anni di Crossmaglen.

Saranno chiamati a testimoniare in maniera anonima 33 agenti delle forze di sicurezza.

Una domanda per concedere agli agenti di portare la propria testimonianza nascosti dietro a paraventi verrà discussa in febbraio.

Per l’avvocato della Corona ricevere le dichiarazioni degli agenti “potrebbe prendere un po’ di tempo” perché alcuni di loro svolgono compiti non specificati.

McCaugherty di Beech Court, e Desmond Paul Kearns, di Tannaghmore Green, respingono l’accusa di aver cercato di ottenere armi da fuoco ed esplosivi.

McCaugherty e Gregory, di Concession Road a Crossmaglen, continuano a negare di aver preso accordi per mettere a disposizione dei terroristi l’atto di proprietà di un ristorante in Portogallo.

Sempre McCaugherty smentisce di aver usato 46.000 euro per finalità terroristiche a Bruges in Belggio e ad Amsterdam in Olanda.

Il processo dovrebbe durare 10 settimane e l’avvio è previsto per il prossimo aprile.

Terror suspects ‘recorded by MI5’

Security forces recorded 190 hours of conversations involving three dissident republican suspects facing terror charges, Belfast Crown Court has heard.

The three were arrested in an MI5 sting targeting alleged dissident gun smuggling from May 2005 and June 2006.

In court were Lurgan men Paul Anthony McCaugherty 43, Desmond Paul Kearns, 44, and Crossmaglen man Dermot Declan Gregory, aka Michael Dermot, 41.

Thirty-three security forces personnel are seeking to testify anonymously.

A pre-trial application to allow them to give evidence from behind screens will be heard in February.

A Crown lawyer said getting statements from the agents “could take some time” because a number of them were involved in various unspecified duties.

Mr McCaugherty, 43, of Beech Court and Desmond Paul Kearns, 44 of Tannaghmore Green deny conspiring to possess firearms and explosives.

Mr McCaugherty and Mr Gregory, from Concession Road, Crossmaglen, are denying entering into an arrangement to make the deeds of a restaurant in Portugal available for the purposes of terrorism.

Mr McCaugherty is also denying using 46,000 euros for the purposes of terrorism in Bruges in Belgium and in Amsterdam in Holland.

The trial is expected to last up to 10 weeks and is scheduled to start next April.
