Man shot outside school in Craigavon
A man has been taken to hospital after being shot outside a primary school in Craigavon, Co Armagh.
The incident happened at St Brendan’s Primary School, Moyraverty, just after 3pm on Monday.
Police said it’s believed shots were fired from a car and the man sustained a number of injuries.
He has been taken to Craigavon Area Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
Police have appealed for information and condemned those who carried out the attack.
Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said: “The area was very busy and we believe a number of people may have witnessed this shooting.
“We would ask anyone who has information to contact us as soon as possible so we can progress our investigation.
“There are no words to describe the foolhardiness and complete disregard for the safety of the children and parents who were in the area at the time.
“If you have information, please phone us on 101.”
Local politicians have also condemned the shooting as “deplorable” and reckless”.
Education Minister John O’Dowd, of Sinn Féin, said: “This was a terrifying experience for pupils and staff at the school.
“Those who carried out this shooting showed absolutely no regard for the pupils, their parents, school staff and the wider community.”
DUP Upper Bann MP David Simpson said: “This is totally unacceptable at any time but in broad daylight and within such close proximity to a primary school is incomprehensible.
“Details are limited at present but police are on the ground and I urge anyone with information to contact the PSNI immediately.”
SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly said: “All violence on our streets in unacceptable but this attack, outside a school while children were meeting their parents, was utterly deplorable.
“Those responsible showed a breath-taking recklessness with the safety of these children.”
