La candidata per l’Ulster Unionist Party Jo-Anne Dobson ha conquistato il seggio al Craigavon Borough Council nelle elezioni suppletive, ravvivate da una lotta intestina tra unionisti
La Dobson si è assicurata il 64% dei voti nella circoscrizione di Lurgan, vincendo con 2.494 voti.
Il candidato del Traditional Unionist Voice, David Calvert, si è fermato a 752 voti. Più staccati Liam Mackle, Sinn Fein, con 401 voti e Pat McDade, SDLP, con 256 voti.
Le elezioni suppletive si sono tenute per il fallimento dei consiglieri unionisti ad indicare il sostituto di un consigliere del TUV che si era dimesso.
Mark Russell fu eletto nel 2005 nelle fila del DUP e dopo si era trasferito al TUV. Si è dimesso lo scorso novembre.
Il DUP e l’UUP hanno contestato il candidato presentato dall’altro partito mentre il TUV non è riuscito a far accettare il proprio candidato, una mossa che ha fatto infuriare il leader del partito Jim Allister.
Lo scorso agosto, venne annunciato l’accordo tra DUP e TUV di non forzare un’elezione suppletiva a Craigavon o Ballymoney.
Allister ha affermato che il DUP “si è rimangiato l’accordo di non opporsi al candidato del TUV, proponendo un proprio candidato”.
In un incontro del consiglio, il DUP aveva sostenuto un candidato indipendente “di compromesso” e si lamentò con l’UUP per il mancato appoggio.
Reg Empey, leader dell’Ulster Unionist Party, ha detto che la vittoria elettorale della Dobson “rappresenta la prova più evidente che l’Ulster Unionist Party è tornato in gioco”.

UUP takes Craigavon council seat from TUV
Ulster Unionist Party candidate Jo-Anne Dobson has won a seat on Craigavon Borough Council in a by-election sparked by unionist in-fighting.
Ms Dobson secured 64% of the vote in the Lurgan ward, winning 2,494 votes.
Traditional Unionist Voice’s David Calvert received 752 votes, Liam Mackle of Sinn Fein got 401 votes while SDLP candidate Pat McDade got 256 votes.
The by-election came after unionist councillors failed to agree who should replace a TUV councillor who resigned.
Mark Russell was elected in 2005 as a DUP councillor before moving to the TUV – he stepped down in November.
The DUP and Ulster Unionists objected to each other’s choices, while the Traditional Unionists failed to get their candidate seconded, a move which infuriated party leader Jim Allister.
Last August, it was announced that the TUV and DUP had agreed not to force by-elections in Craigavon or Ballymoney.
Mr Allister said the DUP “welched on its agreement not to oppose a TUV co-option by proposing their own candidate”.
At a council meeting, the DUP instead backed an independent “compromise” candidate and rounded on the Ulster Unionists for not supporting him.
Ulster Unionist leader Sir Reg Empey said Ms Dobson’s election win “represents the clearest possible evidence that the Ulster Unionist Party is back in business”.
