Daithí McKay denuncia pagina Facebook anti-cattolica

Il parlamentare dello Sinn Fein denuncia di essere stato minacciato sul social network da un membro della lealista Ballymaconnelly Sons of Conquerors Flute Band

Daithí McKay, parlamentare dello Sinn Fein per North Antrim, ha presentato alcune denuncia alla polizia per i commenti anti-cattolici e per la minaccia di morte.

I commenti sono stati pubblicati su Facebook.

Un portavoce della banda lealista afferma che la Ballymaconnelly Sons of Conquerors non ha rilasciato commenti sprezzanti su Internet.

Spiega inoltre che non rilasceranno ulteriori commenti, per evitare di aumentare le tensioni nella cittadina di Rasharkin, sede della banda lealista.

McKay ha affermato: “Su Facebook un membro della banda Ballymaconnelly ha fatto commenti minacciosi contro di me e la comunità cattolica in generale.

“Mi ha minacciato direttamente a luglio e la PSNI sta svolgendo un’indagine”.

Sulla pagina di Facebook, denuncia McKay, sono comparse le scritte “kill all taigs” (uccidi tutti i cattolici, Ndt) e “la feccia a Rasharkin”.

“Questi commenti rendono chiaro che l’autore, in questo caso un membro della Ballymaconnelly, ha marciato attraverso Rasharkin solamente per ragioni settarie”, prosegue il parlamentare.

“So che molti nella comunità guarderano alla gestione della denuncia da parte della PSNI, come test fondamentale su quanto seriamente vengono prese le minacce di morte nella zona di Ballymoney”.

La polizia rivela di aver ricevuto le denunce per i commenti offensivi sul social network nelle giornate del 27 luglio e del 18 agosto, e stanno svolgendo le indagini.

Parata

Ogni agosto, la Ballymaconnelly Sons of Conquerors Flute Band, insieme ad altre 40 bande, marcia attraverso la cittadina di Rasharkin.

Negli ultimi anni ci sono stati vari disordini durante la parata. Gli unionisti sono furiosi con la Commissione Parate perché ha deciso di cambiare il percorso, mentre i nazionalisti sono sul piede di guerra perché le bande hanno potuto attraversare tutta la cittadina.

Secondo i residenti nazionalisti, la dimensione della parata è sproporzionata rispetto al numero di abitanti di Rasharkin.

John Finlay, consigliere DUP di Ballymonry, afferma che i “teppisti repubblicani” di Rasharkin stanno cercando di “cacciare i protestanti”.

L’ultima parata, avvenuta venerdì scorso, era oggetto di una decisione sul percorso da parte della Commissione Parate.

“Sfortunatamente non c’è ancora un accordo locale su come le parate devono svolgersi a Rasharkin, ed in tale situazione la Commissione Parate è obbligata ad intervenire”, afferma il presidente della Commissione Peter Osborne.

“La nostra decisione rappresenta i nostri sforzi migliori per bilanciare i diritti dei residenti con quelli di chi desidera marciare”.

MLA reports anti-Catholic Facebook page to police

A Sinn Fein MLA has said he has been threatened by a member of the Ballymaconnelly loyalist flute band on a social network site.

North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay lodged a number of complaints with police about anti-Catholic comments and a death threat.

Mr McKay said the comments had been posted on Facebook.

A spokesperson for the Ballymaconnelly band said the band had not made any derogatory comments on the internet.

They also said the band would not be dragged into trying to raise tensions in the village by commenting further.

Mr McKay said: “A member of the Ballymaconnelly band has been making threatening comments towards me and the Catholic community in general on Facebook.

“He made a direct threat towards me in July and that is currently being investigated by the PSNI.”

Mr McKay said comments such as “kill all taigs” and “scum in Rasharkin” appeared on the Facebook page.

“Such comments make it quite clear that the author, in this case a member of the Ballymaconnelly band, is only parading through Rasharkin for sectarian reasons,” he said.

“I know that many in the local community will be looking at how the PSNI deal with this complaint as a litmus test of how serious they take sectarian death threats in the Ballymoney area.”

The police said they have received complaints about offensive comments on a social network site on 27 July and 18 August, and were investigating.

Parade

Every August, the Ballymaconnelly Sons of Conquerors Flute Band, along with 40 other bands, parade through the village of Rasharkin.

There has been trouble at the parade in recent years with unionists angered at Parade Commission determinations changing the route, and nationalists annoyed the parade is allowed to walk through the village at all.

Local nationalist residents said the size of the parade is disproportionate to the size of Rasharkin.

Ballymoney DUP Councillor, John Finlay, said “republican hoods” in the village were trying to “chase and bully Protestants out”.

The most recent parade, which took place on Friday evening, was subjected to a determination by the Parades Commission over its route.

“Unfortunately there is not yet a local agreement on how parades should take place in Rasharkin and in that situation the Parades Commission is obliged to intervene,” said commission chairman, Peter Osborne.

“Our decision represents our best efforts to strike a balance between the rights of residents and the rights of those who wish to parade.”
