Il repubblicano impegnato nella dirty protest nella prigione di Maghaberry sostiene che le condizioni, anche sanitarie, nel carcere di massima sicurezza si stanno rapidamente deteriorando.
Damien McLaughlin, il primo prigioniero della protesta ad essere liberato, ha descritto in dettaglio le condizioni terribili in cui vivono i detenuti repubblicani e lavora il personale carcerario.
I 34 detenuti repubblicani sono impegnati in una disputa con le autorità per l’esecuzione forzata delle strip search (perquisizioni corporali).
McLaughlin ha detto: “I prigionieri splamano i loro escrementi sui muri delle celle, altrimenti li miscelano con l’urina versandoli sul corridoio attraverso le loro porte.
“L’interno delle celle è terribile, fuori è uguale. Il fetore è incredibile. La squadra anti-sommossa è posizionata permanentemente nel nostro corridoio. Sono vestiti di bianco, con tute usa e getta, caschi, stivali e guanti in lattice.
“Sono armati di bastoni. Vagano attraverso gli escrementi e le urine per consegnarci i pasti da consumare nelle nostre celle. E’ un grave pericolo per la salute e c’è un reale pericolo di insorgenza di malattie”.
I detenuti rivendicano l’installazione di una sedia BOSS – una macchina tipo raggi X già presente a Maghaberry – che renda non necessaria la degradante pratica delle strip search, utilizzate solo per “degradare e criminalizzare” i repubblicani.
Ma guardie carcerarie insistono che le strip search sono vitali per la sicurezza e occorre solo biasimare la protesta dei detenuti per i rischi sanitari attuali.
McLaughlin ha sostenuto che i prigionieri vengono rinchiusi nelle loro celle per 22 ore al giorno e a volte gli è stato negato il cibo per 16 ore.
La situazione era “al punto di rottura”, ha affermato: “Le tensioni sono altissime. Maghaberry è una polveriera”.
I detenuti repubblicani si rifiutano di radersi o tagliarsi i capelli. McLaughlin, di 35 anni, padre di due figli da Ardboe, Co Tyrone, è stato rilasciato lo scorso venerdì.
Uscendo dalla prigione per essere accolto da familiari ed amici, sembrava un blanketman degli H-Block ritornato dagli anni Settanta, sfoggiando una folta barba.
McLaughlin, che ha scontato due anni a Maghaberry per possesso di armi, ha subito 23 strip search. Ha riferito che Colin Duffy è stato sottoposto a perquisizione forzata per ben 76 volte.
Nella testimonianza di McLaughlin si può intire la brutalità delle strip search.
“Un ufficiale carcerario ti afferra la testa, altri due bloccano le vostre mani, mentre il quarto vi tiene giù sul pavimento” ha raccontato.
“Ti strappano i pantaloni, i calzini ed i boxer. Passano uno scanner sulla vostra schiena e sui genitali. Poi, perquisiscono il busto.
“Dopo una perquisizione forzata, ti senti come dopo un incidente stradale. Hai dolori tutto il corpo”.
Alla domanda sul perché la popolazione dovrebbe preoccuparsi per uomini accusati o condannati per gravi reati, McLaughlin ha risposto: “Sappiamo che molta gente non nutre simpatie per noi.
“I detenuti non si aspettano un trattamento con i guanti. Le prigioni non sono colonie di vacanza, ma non dovrebbero essere luoghi di disumanità. La dirty protest è l’ultima risorsa, perché siamo stati trattati come animali”.
McLaughlin spiega che per impedire ai prigionieri di dormire le luci sono volutamente tenute accese nelle celle dei prigionieri oppure le porte vengono sbattute tre o quattro volte per notte.
Il servizio di carcere nega con forza le accuse di brutalità o di molestie. Il DUP accusa i repubblicani di voler “trasformare Maghaberry in Maze”.

A dissident republican on dirty protest in Maghaberry jail claims the North’s top security prison is fast deteriorating into a cesspit of disease.
Damien McLaughlin, the first prisoner on the protest to be freed, described in graphic detail the horrific conditions in which republican inmates live and prison staff work.
The 34 republican inmates are engaged in a bitter dispute with the authorities over forced strip-searching.
McLaughlin said: “Prisoners are smearing their excrement on cell walls or else mixing it with urine and pouring it out their doors onto the landing.
“Inside the cells are awful, outside is a mess too. The stench is unbelievable. The riot squad are permanently on our landing. They’re dressed in white disposable boiler suits, helmets, boots, and latex gloves.
“They’re armed with batons. They tramp through the excrement and urine to hand us meals to be eaten in our cells. It’s a serious health hazard and there’s a real danger of a disease outbreak.”
The protesting prisoners claim a BOSS chair – an X-ray-type machine already in Maghaberry – means strip searching isn’t needed and is used only to “degrade and criminalise” republicans.
But prison officers insist strip-searching is vital to security and the prisoners’ protest is to blame for the current health risks.
McLaughlin claimed the prisoners were locked in their cells 22 hours a day and were sometimes denied food for up to 16 hours.
The situation was “at breaking point”, he claimed: “Tensions are at an all-time high. Maghaberry is a powder keg.”
Republican inmates are refusing to shave or cut their hair. McLaughlin, a 35-year-old father of two from Ardboe, Co Tyrone, was released last Friday.
Emerging from the prison to be greeted by family and friends, he looked like a H-Block blanketman from the 1970s, sporting a bushy beard.
McLaughlin, who served two years in Maghaberry for weapons’ possession, was forcibly strip-searched 23 times. He said Colin Duffy – charged with murdering two British soldiers at Massereene – had been strip-searched 76 times.
McLaughlin claimed strip-searching was brutal. “One prison officer grabs your head, two others grip your hands, while the fourth holds you down on the floor,” he said.
“They tear off your trousers, socks and boxer shorts. They run a scanner over your back passage and genitals. Then, they search your upper body.
“After a strip search, you feel like you’ve been in a car crash. Your whole body aches.”
When asked why there should be any public concern for men accused or convicted of serious offences, McLaughlin said: “We know many people have no sympathy for us.
“Prisoners don’t expect kid-glove treatment. Jails aren’t holiday camps but neither should they be places of inhumanity. The dirty protest was a last resort because we were being treated like animals.”
McLaughlin claimed lights are deliberately shone into prisoners’ cells, or else their doors are banged three or four times a night, to stop them sleeping.
The prison service strongly denies allegations of brutality or harassment. The DUP accuses republicans of wanting to “turn Maghaberry into the Maze”.
