L’uomo lavorava come fattorino per un ristorante cinese ed era già stato preso di mira due volte dai repubblicani
La sparatoria fatale è avvenuta nella zona di Divis, West Belfast, poco prima delle 22:30 di lunedì sera.
Secondo i primi testimoni, l’uomo è stato colpito al collo dal suo assalitore.
Daniel Murray è stato trasportato in ospedale in gravi condizioni, ma non è sopravvissuto nonostante gli sforzi compiuti dal personale medico.
Murray si trovava alla guida della sua Ford Focus blu in Lady Street, probabilmente attirato con l’inganno nella zona da una richiesta di consegna di cibo.
Il sedile e la cintura di sicurezza lato guida erano completamente sporchi di sangue, hanno detto i testimoni oculari.
La vittima aveva 54 anni.
Si tratta del terzo attacco armato avvenuto a belfast nel giro di 24 ore.
Negli altri attacchi, due giovani sono rimasti feriti.
Il parlamentare dello Sinn Féin Paul Maskey ha inviato le sue condoglianze alla famiglia di Daniel Murray.
Il politico si trovava sulla scena dell’attacco quando la polizia ha avvisato che l’uomo era morto.
“Questa è una notte triste per Belfast e per la società, con numerosi attacchi avvenuti in tutta la città” ha detto Maskey.
“Ci sarà una famiglia in lutto questa sera e a loro mando le mie condoglianze.
“Questo genere di attacchi non hanno scopo e devono cessare”-
Esattamente un anno fa Daniel Murray era stato vittima di un altro attacco armato.
Un commando di repubblicani gli aveva sparato al viso vicino alla sua abitazione di North belfast.
Daniel Murray, originario di Turf Lodge a West Belfast, all’epoca disse di essere stato accusato di essere uno spacciatore di droga – da lui sempre smentito – e avrebbe lasciato la sua abitazione.
Dopo essere guarito dalle ferite, disse che l’attacco era una vera e propria esecuzione.
“Era un singolo colpo al volto. Non volevano far altro”, aveva detto.
“Non ho idea del motivo – non ci sono stati avvertimenti.
Mi è stata data una seconda opportunità e voglio scoprire perché.
“Mi stanno accusando di spacciare droga e voglio che lo provino.
“Mi hanno chiamato spacciatore – ma non lo sono”.
Daniel Murray descrisse così l’attacco del 2015.
“Avevano una pistola calibro 9 millimetri. Fu un’esecuzione – entrarono direttamente e spararono.
“Non esitarono, non diedero alcun avvertimento. Mi sono voltato e il proiettile mi finì in faccia.
“Colpì la mia mandibola, deviò la traiettoria e finì nella mia spalla.
“Rimasi scioccato quando mi spararono, pensavo mi avessero sparato alla gola e sentii un atroce dolore alla spalla. C’era sangue ovunque”.
Murray si dimise volontariamente dall’ospedale dopo l’operazione chirurgica, affermando che avrebbe contattato i vari gruppi paramilitari per capire il motivo per il quale era stato colpito.
Già in precedenza era stato ferito in un attacco della Continuity IRA prima del tentato omicidio dell’anno scorso.
Affermò che si trattava di un tentativo di estorsione e negò di vendere droga. Sfidò i paramilitari a produrre prove della sua attività criminale.
Anche Alex Attwood, SDLP, ha condannato l’omicidio di ieri sera.
“Sono sconvolto dagli eventi delle ultime 24 ore avvenuti a North e West Belfast.
“I responsabili di questi incidenti armati devono essere condannati da tutti.
“Dobbiamo dimostrare la stessa risolutezza mostrata in passato – resistere a chi esegue queste atrocità, a chi usa le pistole per respingere la democrazia irlandese e ignorare il ruolo della legge.
“Chiedo a chiunque possieda informazioni di condividerle con la polizia”.
Daniel Murray lascia una compagna ed un figlio.
La moglie di Murray morì di cancro alcuni anni fa.

Drug lord Daniel Murray shot dead in car in Belfast had cheated death twice before
A hot food delivery driver targeted twice previously by dissident republicans was shot dead in his car in west Belfast last night.
The fatal shooting happened in the Divis area shortly before 10.30pm.
It was reported by local people that the man was hit in the neck by his assailant.
He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, but did not survive despite efforts to save him.
He was targeted while sitting in his dark-coloured Ford Focus car in Lady Street after possibly being lured to the area by a bogus fast food delivery order.
The driver’s seat and seatbelt were seen to be heavily bloodstained by witnesses.
The victim was named locally as Daniel Murray (54).
Police confirmed the death late last night.
It was the third shooting in Belfast in the space of less than 24 hours.
Two other young men were wounded in the other two attacks.
West Belfast Sinn Fein MP Paul Maskey said his thoughts and sympathies were with the dead man’s family.
He visited the scene, where police informed him the man had passed away.
He said: “This a sad night for Belfast and for society with a number of shootings across the city.
“There will be a family grieving tonight and my sympathies go out to them.
“These types of attacks serve no purpose and must stop.”
Mr Murray was previously targeted in a gun attack almost exactly a year ago.
He was shot in the face by dissident republican vigilantes in 2015 near his north Belfast home.
Mr Murray, who was originally from the Turf Lodge area of west Belfast, said at the time he had been accused of being a drug dealer – which he denied – and would have to flee his home.
As he recovered from that shooting, he said the attack was an attempt to execute him.
“It was one face shot, one head shot. They didn’t aim for anywhere else,” he said.
“I’ve no idea why – there was no warning.
“I’ve been given a second chance and I want to find out why.
“They are accusing me of drug dealing and I want them to prove it.
“They’ve branded me a drug dealer – and I’m not.”
Mr Murray described the previous shooting in detail.
“They had a 9-mill gun. It was an execution (attempt) – they came straight in and ‘bang’.
“They didn’t hesitate, they didn’t give any warnings. I turned around and the bullet went into my face.
“It hit my jaw, hit the bone and went right down and into my shoulder.
“I staggered when they shot me, I thought they had shot me in the throat at first and I could feel most of the pain in my shoulder. There was a lot of blood.”
Mr Murray discharged himself early from hospital after surgery, saying he was going to contact the various paramilitary groups to ask why he was being targeted.
He had been wounded in a Continuity IRA gun attack before last year’s murder attempt.
He claimed that was an extortion bid, and again denied he sold drugs. He challenged the paramilitaries to produce any evidence of criminal activity.
West Belfast SDLP MLA Alex Attwood condemned those behind all the shootings.
He said: “I am appalled by the events of the last 24 hours in areas of west and north Belfast.
“Those behind these deplorable shootings must be condemned outright by us all.
“We must demonstrate the same resolve we did in the past – resist those who carry out these atrocities, who use guns to reject Irish democracy and ignore the rule of law.
“I urge anyone with information about these shootings to share it with the police so those responsible can be taken off our streets.”
Mr Murray leaves a partner and a young son behind.
His wife died of cancer several years ago.
