David Ford: nel 2011 diminuiti gli attacchi repubblicani

Il numero degli attacchi compiuto dai gruppi repubblicani è sceso rispetto allo scorso anno

Lo ha riferito in Assemblea il ministro della Giustizia David Ford, illustrando come, sebbene il livello di minaccia sia ancora grave, ci siano stati 25 attacchi quest’anno rispetto ai 40 del 2010.

Gli obiettivi principali, ha spiegato Ford, sono stati gli agenti di polizia.

Ha ricordato che i successi delle forze di sicurezza da entrambi i lati del confine sono stati importanti per contrastare la minaccia.

Thomas Buchanan, parlamentare del DUP, ha chiesto al ministro di illustrare l’attuale livello dell’attività armata repubblicana e la minaccia verso i membri delle forze di sicurezza e, in generale, contro la popolazione.

Nella sua replica Ford ha affermato che l’attacco con una pipe bomb controla casa di un ex agente in pensione a Lawrencetown avvenuto lo scorso ottobre, illustra come la polizia sia ancora l’obiettivo primario dei repubblicani.

“Ma hanno anche compiuto attacchi di recente contro imprese commerciali e contro l’ufficio della Città della Cultura di Derry/Londonderry”, ha proseguito.

“Hanno mostrato poco rispetto per chi serve la comunità e per la sicurezza pubblica. I responsabili non hanno riguardo per i danni che possono provocare alle persone, agli affari o alla nostra immagine all’estero”.

Secondo il ministro della giustizia, la PSNI e la Garda stanno continuando a lavorare duramente per contrastare la minaccia.

“Voglio riconoscere il loro continuo impegno e collaborazione nel frustrare gli sforzi dei terroristi”, ha affermato in Assemblea.

“Ci sono stati importanti successi da entrambi i lati del confine negli ultimi mesi”.

“Non solo la polizia può fornire la risposta” per la via da intraprendere.

“Abbiamo bisogno di continuare a dimostrare a tutti i terroristi che non hanno niente da offrire e che ci sono metodi democratici da utilizzare” ha concluso David Ford.

Decrease in number of dissident republican attacks: Ford

The number of attacks carried out by dissident Republicans has fallen since last year, the Northern Ireland Assembly has been told.

Justice Minister David Ford said that while the threat level remained severe, there had been 25 attacks this year, compared to 40 in 2010.

Mr Ford said the principal targets were police officers.

He said successes by security forces on both sides of the border had been significant in tackling the threat.

DUP MLA Thomas Buchanan had asked the justice minister to detail the current level of dissident republican activity and the threat it posed to members of the security forces and the general public.

In his reply, Mr Ford said a pipe bomb attack on the home of a retired police officer in Lawrencetown in October illustrated that police were the the principal targets of dissidents.

“But they have also conducted recent attacks on commercial premises and on the Derry/Londonderry City of Culture office,” he said.

“They have demonstrated disregard for those serving the community and for public safety. Those responsible have no regard for the harm they cause whether to people, or business or, indeed, our image abroad.”

The justice minister said the PSNI and Garda were continuing to work hard to tackle the threat.

“I would like to acknowledge their continued endeavours and co-operation in frustrating the efforts of terrorists,” he said.

“There have been significant successes both sides of the border in recent months.”

He said the way forward depended “not simply on police to provide the answer”.

“We need to continue to demonstrate to all terrorists that they have nothing to offer and that there are democratic means for engagement,” Mr Ford said.
