Declan O’Loan sospeso dallo SDLP

Il parlamentare di North Antrim è stato sospeso dopo aver chiesto un unico partito nazionalista, affermazione subito ritrattata

La leader del partito nazionalista Margaret Ritchie ha ritirato la carica di whip (funzionario che stabilisce la disciplina dei colleghi di partito) al parlamentare di North Antrim dopo aver detto che andrebbe valutata la fusione con lo Sinn Fein.

O’Loan non potrà prendere il suo posto nel gruppo SDLP in Assemblea ma continua ad essere membro del partito.

Potrebbe essere rimesso al proprio posto nel mese di settembre.

Un portavoce dell’SDLP ha affermato: “Dopo un incontro con la leader del partito Margaret Ritchie, il posto di funzionario del partito (whip) è stato tolto a Declan O’Loan fino a data da stabilire, che sarà decisa del leader del partito”.

Lunedì, O’Loan aveva detto: “Ritengo che sia giunto il momento per un importante reallineamento del nazionalismo e credo questo significhi la formazione di un nuovo partito nazionalista unico”.

In poche ore ha provveduto a ritirare la dichiarazione.

A inizio del mese, lo SDLP aveva mantenuto tre seggi a Westminster, contro i cinque dello Sinn Fein.

Nell’avvicinarsi delle elezioni, lo SDLP aveva respinto la richiesta dello Sinn Fein di ritirare il candidato a Fermanagh & South Tyrone, Fearghal McKinney, affermando che non voleva partecipare a politiche settarie.

A South Belfast Alasdair McDonnell, candidato SDLP, ha mantenuto il proprio seggio, aiutato anche dal ritiro di Alex Maskey dello Sinn Fein.

O’Loan suspended after merger call

North Antrim MLA Declan O’Loan has been suspended from the SDLP’s Stormont ranks after he called for a united nationalist party in a statement he later retracted.

Party leader Margaret Ritchie withdrew the whip from the North Antrim MLA after he controversially said on Monday they should consider merging with rival party Sinn Fein.

Mr O’Loan will be unable to take his place in the SDLP’s Assembly group but continues to be a member of the party.

It is understood it could be September before the MLA is reinstated at Stormont.

An SDLP spokesman said: “Following a meeting with party leader Margaret Ritchie this morning, the party whip has been removed from Declan O’Loan MLA until a future date, to be determined by the party leader.”

On Monday, Mr O’Loan said: “I believe that a major realignment of northern nationalism is now called for and I think that this means the formation of a new single nationalist party.”

He withdrew the statement within hours.

Earlier this month, the SDLP retained three seats at Westminster to Sinn Fein’s five.

In the run-up to the election, the party rejected Sinn Fein calls for candidate Fearghal McKinney to stand aside in Fermanagh and South Tyrone, saying it would not participate in sectarian politics.

In South Belfast, SDLP MP Alasdair McDonnell retained his seat after Sinn Fein’s Alex Maskey decided to stand aside.
