Parlando prima della visita la NíChuilin ha affermato:
“Nel corso degli ultimi mesi, quando la protesta nella Roe House è aumentata, abbiamo tenuto alcuni incontri con i prigionieri, con l’amministrazione penitenziaria e il ministro della Giustizia.
“Abbiamo detto fin dall’iizio che la situazione presente nella Roe House era inaccettabile e c’era bisogno di un cambiamento. E’ sempre stato il nostro pensiero che questo si sarebbe potuto ottenere se veniva mostrata la necessaria volontà politica.
“La scorsa settimana i prigionieri hanno raggiunto un accordo con le autorità carceraria e la protesta è cessata. E’ stata una notizia positiva. Tuttavia ciò che adesso deve avvenire è che tutti gli accordi stipulati siano onorati e non verrà permesso un ritorno al precedente regime. Nel passato l’implementazione di tali accordi erano stati frustrati dall’attitudine del Prison Officers’ Association. Non permettermo che questo accada anche stavolta”.

Speaking today in advance of the visit Ms NíChuilin said:
“In the course of the past number of months as the protest in Roe House escalated, we held a number of meetings with the prisoners, the prison administration and the Justice Minister.
“We said from the outset that the situation that pertained in Roe House was unacceptable and needed to change. It was always our belief that this could and would happen if the necessary political will was shown.
“Last week the prisoners reached an agreement with the prison authorities and the protest ended. This was welcome news. However what needs to happen now is that all agreements reached are honoured and no return to the previous regime is allowed. In the past the implementation of such agreements has been frustrated by the attitude of the POA. That cannot be allowed to happen in this instance.”
