Organizzato dalla Free Derry Collective (FDC) come parte del Gasyard Feile di quest’anno, A Celebration of Resistance: James Connolly: 1910 – 2010, avrà luogo presso il Gasyard il 26 luglio.
Tra i partecipanti a questo evento unico ci sono l’attivista per i diritti civili Bernadette McAliskey, lo storico del Labour dottor Emmet O’Connor e l’ex prigioniero repubblicano e organizzatore IWU, Tommy McKearney.
Un portavoce dell’FDC dice che l’evento esaminerà l’impatto di Connolly, giustiziato dai britannici dopo la Easter Rising (Rivolta di Pasqua) del 1916, sulla vita in Irlanda.
“Cento anni fa, il 26 luglio 1910 in mezzo a crescenti tensioni sociali e industriali, una delle figure rivoluzionarie più importanti d’Irlanda, James Connolly tornò in Irlanda, annunciando quello che doveva essere uno dei periodi più storici per la nostra classe e, successivamente, per la storia irlandese.
“E’ stato durante questo periodo che Connolly, ancora una volta, partecipò alle agitazioni sul posto di lavoro, attraverso il suo ruolo all’interno della Irish Transport and General Workers Union (Sindacato dei trasporti e dei lavoratori generali).
“Con questo aumento di attività sindacalista in tutto il paese, fino al Dublin Lock Out (il Blocco di Dublino del 1913), e la creazione di una delle prime milizie di lavoratori, l’Irish Citizens Army e della sua prematura scomparsa in seguito al suo ruolo svolto durante la Rivolta di Pasqua del 1916, questo evento centenario celebrerà e esaminerà ulteriormente la vita e le politiche radicali di Connolly”.
Il portavoce ha detto che celebrare Connolly è una celebrazione della resistenza della classe operaia sia all’imperialismo che al capitalismo.

Centenary Connolly celebration in Derry

Among those taken part in this unique event are veteran civil rights activist Bernadette McAliskey, Labour historian Dr. Emmet O’Connor and former republican prisoner and IWU organiser, Tommy Mc Kearney.
A FDC spokesman says the event will examine the impact Connolly, executed by the British following the 1916 Easter Rising, has had on life in Ireland.
“One hundred years to the day, on 26 July 1910 amidst increasing social and industrial unrest, one of Ireland’s foremost revolutionary figures James Connolly returned to Ireland, heralding what was to be one of the most historic periods for our class and subsequently for Irish history.
“It was during this time Connolly once again, took part in workplace agitation, through his role within the Irish Transport and General Workers Union.
“With this upsurge in trade unionism activity across the country, to the Dublin Lock Out, and the creation of one of the first workers militia, the Irish Citizens Army and to his untimely death following his role played during the Easter Rising of 1916, this centenary event will both celebrate and examine further the life and radical politics of Connolly. ”
The spokesman says celebrating Connolly a celebration of working class resistance to both imperialism and capitalism.
The event gets underway at 7pm.
