Derry festeggia questa sera la nomina a UK City of Culture 2013 (Città britannica della Cultura)
Derry ha sconfitto le altre candidature di Birmingham, Sheffield e Norwich.
Una grande folla si è radunata presso la Guildhall per ascoltare l’annuncio su maxi schermi.
Il titolo permetterà a Derry di ospitare prestigiosi eventi come i Brit Awards ed ilTurner Prize.
Il vice primo ministro nordirlandese Martin McGuinness, recatosi a Liverpool per l’annuncio, ha affermato: “Sono molto orgoglioso di venire da Derry.
“E’ anche la città di Gregory Campbell, la città di John Hume. E’ una città sinonimo di Seamus Heaney e Brian Friel, di Nadine Coyle e Bronagh Gallagher, Roma Downey, Phil Coulter, gli Undertones e molti, molti altri.
Il consigliere Colum Eastwood, attuale Sindaco di Derry, si è recato a Liverpool per l’annuncio e ha espresso tutta la sua gioia per la notizia.

Derry is buzzing this evening after being crowned UK City of Culture 2013.
Derry beat off competition from Birmingham, Sheffield and Norwich which were also shortlisted.
A large crowd gathered in the Guildhall to hear the result relayed on big screens.
The title could see a number of prestigious events such as the Brit Awards and the Turner Prize hosted in Derry.
NI’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, who travelled to Liverpool for the announcement, said: “I’m very proud to come from Derry.”
“It’s also Gregory Campbell’s city, it’s John Hume’s city. It’s a city synonymous with Seamus Heaney and Brian Friel, synonymous with Nadine Coyle and Bronagh Gallagher, Roma Downey, Phil Coulter, the Undertones and many, many more.”
The Mayor of Derry, Councillor Colum Eastwood, who was also in Liverpool for the live announcement, also expressed his delight at the news.
