Derry: continua allarme in Spencer Road

Spencer Road alert continues

A SECURITY alert along one of the arterial alerts on the annual Apprentice Boys of Derry is continuing.

Spencer Road, DerryPolice say five petrol bombs were thrown at them in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The incident happened as the PSNI investigated reports of a suspicious device being left on Spencer Road at around 2.15am on Saturday morning.

The nearby Iona House guesthouse was evacuated.

Police were attacked by petrol bombers at around 3am whilst carrying out their investigation.

A police spokeswoman said that the PSNI and Army Technical Officers are continuing to examine the scene and that security forces are endeavouring to clear the area before the beginning of the main parade at 12.30pm.

In another incident a man in his 20’s has been seriously injured in what appears to have been a paramilitary style attack in the Waterside at around 2am on Saturday morning.

The victim has been treated in hospital for a head injury and it is understood his hands may have been broken in the attack.

The incident took place at Strule Gardens at approximately 2am on Saturday.

Three masked men wielding golf clubs and a hammer carried out the assault.

A police spokeswoman said: “A motive has yet to be established but a paramilitary style attack is one line of enquiry.”
