Disorder breaks out following parade

Trouble has erupted in the Bogside area of Londonderry, after the annual Apprentice Boys’ parade in the city.

Dissident republican groups held protests during the annual Apprentice Boys‘ parade in Londonderry.

Up to 5,000 supporters turned out to see around 10,000 march to mark the anniversary of the 1688/89 Siege of Derry, in the biggest loyal order parade of the year.

There is a continued heavy police presence in the city, with the dissident republican groups protesting in some places just metres away from where the parade passed.

The 32 County Sovereignty Movement, regarded by many as the political wing of the Real IRA, has set up camp in the Bogside, as part of what they call “a two-day anti-internment camp” about conditions for republican prisoners.

Meanwhile, two men have hijacked a Royal Mail van in the Madamsbank Road area of the city and torched the vehicle in Earhart Park at around 12.30pm.

The fire has been put out but there are reports of other attempted hijackings and motorists are advised to be vigilant.
