Il consigliere shinner Paul Fleming ha preso il suo posto come sindaco di Derry
E’ stato eletto nel consiglio nel 2001. Sue sorella Lynn, anche lei consigliera per lo Sinn Fein, è stata sindaco di Derry nel 2005-06.
Fleming ha ereditato la poltrona di sindaco dal consigliere dello SDLP Gerard Diver e ha parlato di “grande onore”.
“Il ruolo di sindaco è una sfida eccitante che non vedo l’ora di affrontare, e pero di poter seguire l’eccellente esempio mostrato dai miei predecessori rappresentando il meglio che questa città può offrire”, ha detto.
Maurice Devenney, DUP, sarà per il secondo mandato consecutivo il vice sindaco.
Devenney ha affermato che potrebbe incontrare problemi lavorando con un sindaco proveniente dallo Sinn Fein, ma dovranno essere risolti.
“Ci saranno delle difficoltà, ma in una capacità operativa dobbiamo lavorare insieme”, ha proseguito.
“Non sarà semplice come lo scorso anno ma guardo avanti verso la sfida”.

Fleming takes on chain of office
Sinn Féin councillor Paul Fleming has taken over as mayor of Londonderry.
He was elected to the council in 2001. His sister Lynn, who is also a Sinn Féin councillor, was mayor of Derry in 2005-06.
Mr Fleming, who has taken over as mayor from SDLP councillor Gerard Diver, said it was a “great honour”.
“The role of mayor is an exciting challenge that I am looking forward to, and I hope that I can follow the excellent example set by my predecessors in representing the best that this city has to offer,” he said.
The DUP’s Maurice Devenney is to serve a second consecutive term as deputy mayor.
Mr Devenney said he may encounter problems working with a Sinn Fein mayor, but these would have to be overcome.
“It will have its difficulties, but in a business capacity we have to work together,” he said.
“It’s not going to be as easy as last year but I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
