La protesta pubblica è stata organizzata dal gruppo “RAAD – Not in my name” (Non a nome mio, Ndt) e vi hanno partecipato anche parlamentari e consiglieri sia dello Sinn Fein che dello SDLP.
Recentemente il RAAD rivendicato la responsabilità per l’omicidio di Andy Allen, originario del quartiere Waterside a Derry, compiuto a Buncrana e mercoledì sera ha effettuato una punizione in stile paramilitare, sparando a due giovani cugini del Bogside.
Alla manifestazione ha parlato William Allen, zio della prima vittima del gruppo repubblicano.
Allen ha descritto il RAAD come “un branco di codardi” e ha detto loro di “disperdersi”.
“Dicono che non c’è dolore peggiore di quello del parto, ma c’è, ed è la morte di un ragazzo giovane.
“Quando hanno rimosso il corpo di Andy dalla casa per la sepoltura, il suono che ho sentito uscire dalla bocca di sua madre era innaturale e si tratta di qualcosa che non vorrei sopportare di nuovo. È tempo per il RAAD di smettere con la loro propaganda. Non sono altro che una banda di assassini, violentatori di bambini, codardi e bugiardi – è il momento per loro di disperdersi”.
La scorsa settimana il RAAD ha lanciato minacce nei confronti di quattro giovani. A due di loro hanno sparato nelle caviglie giovedì sera, ma un lavoratore comunitario associato con il Centro comunitario Rosemount ha rivelato venerdì sera che le minacce contro gli altri due uomini sono state ritirate.
Intervenendo alla manifestazione di ieri, il parlamentare dello SDLP Pat Ramsey ha accolto con favore l’abolizione delle minacce, ma ha invitato il RAAD a smettere di terrorizzare la gente di Derry.
Ramsey ha dichiarato: “Questa è una mossa ben accolta soprattutto dalle famiglie che vivevano sotto grave stress e pressione a causa di queste minacce.
“Chiaramente questa mossa è stata presa dall’organizzazione per rispecchiare lo stato d’animo della gente di Derry. Li esorto ad andare oltre e a pensare correttamente allo stato d’animo di Derry. Hanno bisogno di revocare immediatamente tutte le minacce di morte contro le persone che vivono qui a Derry e contro le decine che sono state esiliate”.
Raymond McCartney, parlamentare dello Sinn Fein, ha detto che il RAAD non è un gruppo repubblicano e ha aggiunto che chiunque abbia informazioni relative al gruppo deve contattare la PSNI.
“Sono stato un repubblicano tutta la mia vita e posso dirvi che quello che il RAAD sta facendo non ha nulla a che fare con il repubblicanesimo irlandese. Invito chiunque abbia informazioni sul gruppo di riferirle alla polizia, così possiamo rinchiudere dietro le sbarre i responsabili degli attacchi alla nostra comunità”.
Il giornalista e attivista per i diritti civili Eamonn McCann ha detto che il RAAD stavano facendo peggiorare il problema della droga a Derry.
“Il RAAD è completamente inutile. L’ironia e l’ipocrisia sono sprecate contro di essi. Quello che stanno facendo non funziona. Stanno rendendo ancora peggiore il problema della droga nella nostra città ed è tempo che mettano da parte le loro pistole e si sciolgano immediatamente”.

Hundreds attend anti-RAAD rally
The public protest was organised by the ‘RAAD – Not In Our Name’ group and was attended by MLAs and councillors from both Sinn Fein and the SDLP.
Recently, RAAD claimed responsibility for the murder of Waterside man Andy Allen in Buncrana and on Wednesday night they carried out paramilitary style shootings on two young men in the Bogside.
Speaking at the rally was the uncle of RAAD murder victim Andy Allen, William Allen.
Mr. Allen described RAAD as a “bunch of cowards” and told them to “get lost”.
“They say that there’s no pain worse than that of childbirth but there is, it’s called child death.
“When they removed Andy’s body from the house to be buried the sound I heard coming from his mother was unnatural and it’s something I never want to experience it again. It’s time for RAAD to stop with their black propaganda. They are nothing but a gang of murderers, child abusers, cowards and liars – it’s time for them to get lost.”
Earlier this week RAAD issued threats against four young men. Two of the men were shot in the ankles in the Bogside on Thursday evening but a community worker associated with the Rosemount Community Centre revealed on Friday evening that the threat against the other two men had been lifted after negotiations.
Speaking at yesterday’s rally, SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey welcomed the lifting of the threat but called on RAAD to stop terrorising the people of Derry.
Mr. Ramsey said: “This is a welcomed move especially from the families’ perspective as they were living under severe stress and pressure as a result of these threats.
“Clearly this move was taken by the organisation to reflect the mood of the people of Derry. I would urge them to go further and reflect the mood in Derry properly. They need to immediately lift all the death threats on people living in Derry and the dozens who have been exiled.”
Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney said that RAAD were not a republican group and added that anyone with information pertaining to the group should contact the PSNI.
“I have been a republican all of my life and I can tell you now that what RAAD is doing has nothing to do with Irish republicanism. I would call on anyone with information about the group to take it to the police so we can get those responsible for attacking our community locked up behind bars.”
Veteran journalist and civil rights campaigner Eamonn McCann said RAAD were making the drugs problem in Derry worse.
“RAAD are utterly useless. Irony and hypocrisy is wasted on them. What they are doing doesn’t work. They are making the drug problem in our city worse and it’s time that they put down their guns and stand down immediately.”
