Uomini a volto coperto gli hanno sparato ad entrambe le gambe per il suo comportamento anti sociale
Domnica sera membri del Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD) ha trascinato il ventenne nel giardino e gli ha sparato due volte.
In un comunicato inviato al Derry Journal il gruppo paramilitare si è assunto la responsabilità di aver sparato a Gary McGuinness fuori dalla sua casa in Slievemore Park. Il gruppo afferma che la vittima era coinvolta in comportamenti anti sociali nella “grande zona di Galliagh”.
Il RAAD ha concluso con un pesante avvertimento: “Adesso deve finirla o subirà un ulteriore attacco.
Harry, il padre della vittima, ha respinto le accuse contro il figlio. “Non ci credo neppure per un istante”, afferma.
Tre uomini armati sono entrati nell’abitazione intorno alle 21:30. McGuinness padre, in casa al momento dell’attacco, rivive il terrificante momento.
“Gary era sdraiato sul divano a dormire e loro lo hanno colpito in testa e gli hanno chiesto il suo soprannome. Lui ha risposto che viene chiamato «Golf ball» (Palla da Golf) e quindi lo hanno trascinato in giardino e gli hanno sparato poco sotto al ginocchio, nei muscoli del polpaccio, ad entrambe le gambe.
“Ero al piano di sopra e ho sentito due forti scoppi, ma pensavo fossero fuochi artificiali”.
Gli uomini armati hanno lasciato il quartiere dirigandosi verso Collon Lane. McGuinness afferma che hanno rubato il telefono cellulare del figlio durante l’aggressione.
Entrambe le gambe di McGuinness sono state fratturate dai proiettili e ha dovuto subire un intervento chirurgico.
Suo padre ha aggiunto: “Deve già curarsi per tutta la vita per schizofrenia paranoide, adesso questo. Cosa ha fatto per meritare di essere sparato, ecco cosa voglio sapere. Se la gente che ha fatto questo vuole incontrarmi, parlerò con loro”.
Il consigliere SDLP per Shantallow, Shaun Gallagher, ha detto che l’attacco è stato “spaventoso”, aggiungendo che “i giorni in cui la gente era trascinata fuori casa e quindi colpita dovrebbero essere passati”.

Family reject vigilante group’s claims
Man (20) shot in both legs
Republican Action Against Drugs dragged the 20 year-old man into his front garden and shot him twice on Sunday night.
In a statement to the ‘Journal’ yesterday, the paramilitary gang claimed responsibility for shooting Gary McGuinness outside his Slievemore Park home. The vigilantes alleged that the victim was involved in anti social behaviour in the “greater Galliagh area”.
And the group delivered a chilling warning: “He should stop now or face further attack”.
The victim’s father, Harry, dismissed the claims against his son. “I don’t believe it for one minute,” he said.
Three masked men entered the family home at around 9.30pm. Mr McGuinness, who was at home at the time, relived the horrific gun attack.
“Gary was lying on the couch asleep and they tapped him on the head and asked him his nickname. He told them his nickname was ‘Golf ball’ and with that they pulled him out into the garden and shot him just below the knee in both legs in his calf muscles.
“I was upstairs and heard two loud bangs but I thought it was fireworks outside.”
The gunmen made off on foot through the estate in the direction of Collon Lane. Mr McGuinness said the gang stole his son’s mobile phone during the incident.
Both Mr McGuinness’ legs were fractured by the gunshots and he was due to undergo further surgery last night.
His father added: “He’s already on medication for life for paranoid schizophrenia, now this. What did he do to deserve to get shot, that’s what I want to know? If the people who did this want to meet me, then I’ll talk to them.”
SDLP Shantallow Councillor Shaun Gallagher described the attack as “appalling”. “The days of dragging people out of their homes and shooting them should be long gone,” he said.
