La polizia seguirà diverse piste, compresa quella di un attacco settario
La polizia afferma che una pipe bomb è stata lanciata in un’abitazione in un “atto sconsiderato” da parte di una banda paramilitare lealista.
Lunedì sera gli agenti sono stati allertati dopo il lancio di un mattone contro la finestra di una casa situata in Heron Way, Derry, seguito poi da una bottiglia molotov e da una pipe bomb.
L’ordigno a tubo non è esploso e la polizia ritiene che l’attacco sia opera di paramilitari lealisti.
Il Sovrintendente Gordon McCalmont ha detto: “Questa è una bomba lanciata nel cuore della comunità – un atto sconsiderato che riteniamo sia stato compiuto da una banda paramilitare lealista.
“Si tratta di un attacco preoccupante. Prima il lancio di un mattone attraverso una finestra, seguito da una bottiglia molotov e quindi da una pipe bomb. Per fortuna l’ordigno non è esploso, altrimenti le conseguenze sarebbero potute essere peggiori.
“La nostra indagine è alle fasi iniziali e seguiremo differenti piste, compresa quella di un deliberato attacco settario.
“Questo attacco è stato compiuto in un’area residenziale da criminali che non hanno alcun riguardo per la sicurezza degli altri.
“Questa gente non ha nulla da offrire e non meritano posto in una società democratica. Ritengono erroneamente che le loro volontà e le loro attività siano accettate in una città nella quale la maggioranza dei cittadini vogliono semplicemente vivere in pace. I residenti non vogliono essere svegliati dai propri letti e sapere che una pipe bomb è stata ritrovata vicino alle loro case, un posto in cui ritengono di essere al sicuro.
“Oggi mi incontrerò con colleghi e partner per condurre una revisione delle attività operative e investigative per contrastare la minaccia posta in essere da piccoli gruppi di persone.
“Chiedo sostegno alla comunità per identificare i perpetratori di questo attacco e consegnarli alla giustizia. Ringrazio i residenti per la pazienza mostrata”.

Pipe bomb thrown at home by loyalist paramilitary gang, PSNI say
Police will be investigating a number of lines of enquiry, including the fact this may have been a sectarian attack.
A pipe bomb was thrown at a home in a “reckless act” by a loyalist paramilitary gang, the PSNI have said.
Officers were alerted on Monday night, August 21, after a brick was hurled through the window of a home in Heron Way, Derry, followed by a petrol bomb and then a pipe bomb.
The pipe bomb did not explode and police believe members of a loyalist paramilitary gang are responsible.
Superintendent Gordon McCalmont said: “This was a bomb left in the heart of the local community – a reckless act at the hands of what we believe to be a loyalist paramilitary gang.
“This was a concerning attack that took the form of a brick hurled through a window, followed by a petrol bomb and then a pipe bomb. Thankfully, the pipe bomb didn’t explode, or we could have been looking at something very different today.
“Our investigation is at an early stage and we will be investigating a number of lines of enquiry, including the fact this may well have been a sectarian attack.
“This was an act carried out in a residential area by criminals who have absolutely no regard for other people’s safety.
“These people have nothing to offer society and no place in a democratic society. They falsely believe their agenda and their after-dark activities are welcome and wanted in a city where the majority of citizens simply want to live in peace. The community does not want to be woken from its beds and told a pipe bomb had been found near their home, a place where they are supposed to feel safe.
“Today, I will be meeting with colleagues and our partners, and conducting a review of our operational and investigative activities to counter the threat posed by this very small minority of people who were responsible for this.
“I am appealing for the community’s support in identifying the perpetrators and bringing them to justice and I also want to thank the community for their patience and their understanding while we investigate this attack.”
