Il Police Ombudsman Michael Maguire ha incaricato due investigatori indipendenti di compiere un’indagine sull’incidente di Derry avvenuto nel giorno di San Patrizio in cui due agenti di polizia hanno abbandonato una donna vulnerabile e indifesa in una corsia dei bus
Le azioni delle due donne poliziotto, registrate e pubblicate sui social network dal residente Sean McCallion, sono state ampiamente condannate.
Annunciando l’avvio dell’indagine indipendente, un portavoce del Police Ombudsman ha lanciato un appello ai testimoni, chiedendo di contattare il numero verde della polizia.
Nel frattempo la PSNI ha fatto sapere di aver identificato gli agenti coinvolti e che la sospensione del servizio era un possibile sviluppo,ma nessuna azione sarà intrapresa prima della fine dell’indagine del Police Ombudsman.
L’Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton ha detto che “a prima vista” la polizia era seriamente preoccupata per il comportamento delle poliziotte, “ben al di sotto degli standard che ci aspettiamo dai nostri agenti nel trattare con le persone vulnerabili, se la vulnerabilità è dovuta ad alcol o a qualsiasi altra cosa”.
Ha aggiunto: “La sospensione sarà presa in considerazione, ma la polizia attende le raccomandazioni del Police Ombudsman”.
Il comandante PSNI di Derry, il sovrintendente capo Stephen Cargin, ha detto che appena è stato visionato il video è stato passato al Police Ombudsman.
Ha aggiunto: “A volte, quando gli agenti sono indagati a causa di una violazione delle norme, c’è un certo numero di cose che si possono fare. Potrebbero essere sospese o riposizionate a seconda delle indagini”.
Il parlamentare SDLP Pat Ramsey si è detto “assolutamente sgomento” per il comportamento delle agenti coinvolei e ha chiesto una loro immediata sospensione in attesa “di un’indagine completa, franca e veloce”.
“Totalmente inaccettabile” il video per il vice primo ministro Martin McGuinness.
In un tweet ha scritto che le due poliziotte “non sono riuscite ad assicurare la sicurezza di una donna incapace su una strada pubblica”.
La consigliera dello Sinn Féin Elisha McCallion, membro del locale Police and Community Safety Partnership, ha accolto favorevolmente l’intervento del Police Ombudsman nella questione.
Parlando dopo un incontro con il sovrintendente capo Cargin, la consigliera McCallion ha detto che i contenuti del video sono “inquietanti”.
Invita il Police Ombudsman a produrre “il più presto possibile” un rapporto, affinché tutte le raccomandazioni possano essere attuate.
Il consigliere SDLP John Boyle, anche lui presente alla riunione dell’organismo di controllo, ha detto che la popolazione si attende “un maggior grado di diligenza da parte delle nostre forze di polizia”.

INDEPENDENT INQUIRY LAUNCHED INTO ACTION OF DERRY POLICE OFFICERS
The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has appointed two independent investigators to carry out a probe into the St Patrick’s Day incident in Derry in which police officers abandoned an incapacitated woman in a bus lay by.
The actions of the officers involved in the incident, recorded and posted on social media by local man Sean McCallion, has been widely condemned.
Announcing an independent investigation was under way, a spokesperson for Police Obudsman Dr Michael Maguire appealed to anyone who saw what happened to contact the Police Ombudsman’s freephone witness appeal line on 0800 032 7880.
Meanwhile, the PSNI has said the officers involved had been identified and suspension was a possibility but no action would be taken until the Ombudsman’s investigation was complete.
Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton said “at a first view” the police were seriously concerned and the officers’ behaviour, was “well below the standards we expect from our officers in dealing with vulnerable people whether the vulnerability is due to alcohol or anything else.”
He added: “Suspension will be a consideration but the police are awaiting ombudsman recommendations.”
Derry police commander Chief Superintendent Stephen Cargin said as soon as he viewed the video it was referred to the Ombudsman.
He added: “On occasions, when officers are investigated because of a breach of standards, there a number of things that can be done. They could be suspended or repositioned depending on the investigation.”
However, Derry SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey said he was “absolutely incensed” by the conduct of the officers involved and called for them to be suspended immediately pending ”what must be a full, frank and speedy investigation.”
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said the video was “totally unacceptable.”
In a Tweet, he said it showed the two officers “failing to ensure the safety of an incapacitated woman on a public roadway.”
Derry Sinn Féin councillor Elisha McCallion, a member of the local Police and Community Safety Partnership, has welcomed the matter being referred to the Ombudsman.
Speaking after a meeting with CS Cargin, Cllr McCallion she said the contents of the video were “disturbing.”
Calling on the Ombudsman to bring back a report “as soon as possible” so that any recommendations could be implemented, she described what had happened as “disgusting.”
SDLP Councillor John Boyle, who was also attended the meeting, said members of the public expected a “greater degree of due care from our police.”
