Derry: Real IRA responsabile per bomba in Guildhall Square

La Real IRA si è assunta la responsabilità per l’attacco esplosivo contro gli uffici di City of Culture in Custom House Street, avvenuto nelle prime ore di lunedì

Una persona ha telefonato al Derry Journal, affermando di parlare a nome della Real IRA. Ha fornito la parola in codice corretta – che identifica i comunicati del gruppo repubblicano – e ha affermato che l’attacco è stato portato contro “un obiettivo britannico”.

L’esplosione ha provocato lievi danni all’ufficio, il cui scopo è di coordinare gli sforzi per preparare Derry a gestire la nomina a prima Città della Cultura del Regno Unito nel 2013. L’esplosione è avvenuta intorno alle 3:30 di lunedì. I vetri nella porta dell’ufficio sono stati infranti, ma nessuno è rimasto ferito dallo scoppio.

La PSNI ha parlato di un “piccolo ordigno”.

L’area intorno alla zona dell’esplosione ieri mattina è stata cordonata, causando prolemi ai pedoni che dovevano andare al lavoro e alle scuole durante l’ora di punta mattutina. Alcuni esercizi commerciali, tra cui un supermercato, sono stati chiusi mentre gli artificieri dell’esercito e gli agenti della polizia esaminavano la scena.

Il cordone, che si estendeva da Shipquay Place fino a Strand Road per teminare in Waterloo Place, è stato tolto poco prima delle 12:30.
L’attacco è stato condannato da tutti i politici locali, ma il sindaco aggiunge che non servirà a bloccare i preparativi per la celebrazione della City of Culture 2013.

Eastwood ha detto: “Abbiamo un’agenda per il cambiamento e cercare di distogliere la città dal suo percorso non aiuta. Il viaggio di cambiamento proseguirà e non ci faremo fermare”.

Mark Durkan, parlamentare per la circoscrizione di Foyle, dice che gli aggressori sono anti-Derry. “La gente dietro a questo attacco hanno solo provato che sono contrari alle cose positive che stanno avveendo a Derry.

“Sono le persone dietro a City of Culture, quelli che la promuovono e stanno attraendo nuovi visitatori a Derry, sono loro i veri patrioti – non chi piazza questo tpo di ordigni”.

Il consigliere dello Sinn Fein Paul Fleming ha detto che i responsabili non hanno nulla da offrire agli abitanti. “C’è gente che sta lavorando molto duramente negli uffici di City of Culture per attirare investimenti, turismo e lavoro per i cittadini di Derry e lavorando per assicurarsi che la cultura irlandese sia pienamente inclusa nei piani per Derry 2013. L’ultima cosa di cui hanno bisogno sono incidenti come questo, che minano quel buon lavoro”.

Gli investigatori della PSNI vogliono parlare con chiunque fosse nella zona al momento dell’attacco. “Vogliamo parlare in particolare con i tassisti presenti nella zona, che potrebbero aver caricato in auto due uomini vestiti di scuro”, fa sapere un portavoce.

Bomb Anger

The Real IRA have claimed responsibility for the bomb attack on the City of Culture offices on Custom House Street in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A caller claiming to represent the group contacted the ‘Journal’ using a recognised codeword to say it had carried out the attack on what it described as “a UK target”.

The explosion caused minor damage to the office, which co-ordinates efforts to prepare for Derry’s term as the first UK City of Culture in 2013.It happened at around 3.30am yesterday. Glass in the door of the office shattered but no one was injured in the blast.

The PSNI said the blast was caused by “a small device”.

The area around the blast scene was cordoned off yesterday morning, causing problems for pedestrians trying to get to work and schools during the morning rush hour. A number of local businesses, including a supermarket, were also closed while British army bomb disposal experts and PSNI forensic officers examined the scene.

The cordon, which extended from Shipquay Place to the Strand Road end of Waterloo Place, was lifted shortly before 12.30pm yesterday.
The bomb attack has been condemned by local politicians but the Mayor of Derry said it would not deter preparations for the City of Culture celebrations.

Colr. Eastwood said; “We’ve a strong agenda for change and attempts to deflect the city from this path are unhelpful. This journey of change will continue and we will not be deterred.”

Foyle MP Mark Durkan said the bombers are anti-Derry. “The people behind this attack have only proved that they are against positive things happening in Derry.

“It is the people behind the City of Culture, those who are selling it and attracting new visitors to Derry, who are the real patriots – not those who would plant this type of device.”

Sinn Féin councillor Paul Fleming said those responsible have nothing to offer local people. “There are people working very hard at the City of Culture offices to attract investment, tourism and jobs for the citizens of Derry and working to ensure that Irish culture in fully included in the plans for Derry in 2013. The last thing they need is incidents like this, undermining that good work.”

PSNI detectives want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time. “They would particularly like to speak to any taxi drivers who were in the area and may have been picked up two men in dark clothing,” a spokesperson said.
