La polizia ha sventato un potenziale attacco con mortaio nei pressi di una stazione PSNI a Derry
Un mortaio capace di funzionare è stato ritrovato durante un’allarme sicurezza nella zona di Lawrence Hill, accanto alla stazione di polizia di Strand Road, a Derry.
La scoperta è stata fatta nel giorno in cui il primo ministro inglese arriva in Irlanda del Nord per un incontro sugli investimenti nella regione.
Il Soprintendente della polizia Stephen Cargin ha detto che i responsabili non hanno mostrato alcun riguardo per le vite degli innocenti.
Ha affermato: “[E solo per buona sorte che non stiamo parlando di vittime o gravi danni alle proprietà.
“Mentre l’ordigno verrà esaminato, bisogna dire con certezza che il loro intento era di ferire o uccidere e creare terrore nella comunità”.
Mille persone sono state evacuate nella notte mentre gli artificieri lavoravano per mettere in sicurezza l’ordigno.
Nei giorni scorsi i repubblicani contrari al processo di pace hanno anche assassinato due persone a Belfast e Derry.

Police station mortar attack thwarted in Londonderry
Police have foiled a suspected mortar attack close to a police station in Co Londonderry.
A viable mortar-type device was discovered during a security alert in the Lawrence Hill area near Strand Road police station in the city.
The discovery was made as Prime Minister David Cameron flew into Northern Ireland for a major investment conference.
Police Service of Northern Ireland Superintendent Stephen Cargin said the perpetrators showed a complete disregard for innocent lives.
He said: “It is only by good fortune that we are not talking about loss of life or serious damage to property.
“While the device will be forensically examined in due course, it is safe to say that the intent here was to kill or injure and create fear within the community.”
Up to 1,000 people had to be evacuated from their homes as Army bomb experts worked through the night to make the device safe.
The find also follows two murders in Belfast and Londonderry which have been blamed on dissident republican extremists opposed to the peace process.
