Derry: terza lettera bomba intercettata

Third letter bomb intercepted

Another letter bomb posted by dissident republicans has been intercepted in Northern Ireland.

It was delivered to the offices of the Public Prosecution Service in Londonderry – the third of its type to be sent through the post.

A stretch of the city’s Limavady Road was sealed off for a time after army explosives experts were called to the offices at Foyle Chambers, which had to be evacuated by staff.

Last Friday, similar devices were discovered addressed to Chief Constable Matt Baggott and Chief Inspector John Burrows, the police commander in Derry.

Republicans opposed to the peace process were blamed.

Foyle SDLP MP Mark Durkan said the people responsible showed complete and utter contempt for the people of the city.

He said: “They are out to destroy, and don’t care if they injure or kill anyone in the process. This callous and dangerous act flies in the face of the efforts made by so many people to improve life here.”

Justice Minister David Ford has said that despite recent attempted attacks, the justice system would continue to fully serve the community.

He added: “Yet again we see members of our community put at risk as a result of the actions of faceless individuals who represent no-one and have absolutely nothing positive to offer.

“They, and anyone who supports them in any way, are to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. This latest attempt to attack those involved in the delivery of the justice system has highlighted the importance of securing a successful outcome to the Haass talks under way.”
