MAN (42) SHOT IN LEG “BY APPOINTMENT”

A 42-year-old man injured in a shooting incident the Ballymagroarty area of Derry on Saturday night was shot “by appointment,” it has been claimed.

The man is being treated for a non-life-threatening injury in Altnagelvin Hospital following the incident which occurred in Corrib Court at around 11.40pm.

Sinn Fein Cllr Eric McGinley said he understood the man had been shot in the leg “by appointment.”

It is the second such shooting in the Ballymagroarty area in the past month.

Police said the victim was shot in the left leg by a man described as being approximately six feet tall and wearing a balaclava and dark clothing.

Cllr McGinley condemned those behind the attack.

He said: “It’s important to repeat the message that there is no place for guns on the streets of our city.

“The community does not want this and the people behind these actions need to stop.”

Police have appealed to anyone that noticed any suspicious activity in the area around 11.00pm to contact CID in Strand Road Police Station on the non emergency 101 telephone number.

A police spokesperson said anyone preferred to provide information without giving their details, they could contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
