Durante il fine settimana, una banda criminale che ha tenuto la comunità di Ballymurphy, West Belfast, sotto assedio con le sue azioni anti-sociali per oltre sei anni, ha compiuto una serie di attacchi contro la tomba del residente di Ballymurphy ed ex comandante della Real IRA a Belfast Jo-Jo O’Connor. La banda ha iniziato tagliando le teste di due statue di Santi, collocate lì dai parenti di Joe. La tomba di Joe “Jo-Jo” O’Connor si trova nel City Cemetery, proprio di fronte a Ballymurphy, e negli ultimi anni è stata sottoposta a ripetuti attacchi.
La gang responsabile, che si chiama “The Rat Pack”, ha regolarmente maltrattato e attaccato i parenti di Joe per oltre sei anni. Un certo numero di case sono state colpite con pietre, hanno appiccato il fuoco con bottiglie molotov e hanno creato allarmi con finti ordigni. Data l’uccisione del suo amato figlio e dopo gli altri attacchi, la madre Margherita ha sentito di non avere altra scelta che lasciare la sua casa e la sua comunità di Ballymurphy, spostandosi in un altro distretto. Nonostante una montagna di prove, una serie di comunità e gruppi politici, tra cui Sinn Féin e SDLP, si sono rifiutati di aiutare la famiglia O’Connor a far terminare le intimidazioni. Non solo questa banda è stata coinvolta negli attacchi contro la famiglia O’Connor, ma era anche profondamente coinvolta nell’irruzione nelle case della popolazione locale, dove rubava tutto quello che poteva comprese le loro auto, nello spaccio di droga e nei pestaggi.
Non sorprende che alcuni membri della gang siano stati rapidamente rilasciati dopo i ripetuti arresti, permettendo loro di continuare il loro regno di terrore a West Belfast, confermando i sospetti secondo cui hanno accettato di “lavorare” come informatori per la RUC/PSNI in cambio dell’impuinità. Durante il recente conflitto, molti criminali hanno lavorato per la polizia politica e trasmesso informazioni sui repubblicani a scopo di lucro e per avere la libertà di continuare la loro attività anti-comunitaria. Questa antica pratica non è cambiata di una virgola, come dichiarò nel 2005 l’Assistant Chief Constable della PSNI, Judith Gillespie, “di usare fonti di intelligence sotto copertura”. Durante questo regno del terrore, i Rat Pack non sono stati toccati dalla RUC/PSNI. Solo la settimana scorsa, Matt Baggot ha annunciato che stava progettando un “giro di vite” contro i repubblicani che effettuano attacchi punitivi. Non ci vuole un genio a capire che la profanazione della tomba di Jo-Jo è stata progettata dagli handler (chi gestisce gli infiltrati) dello Special Branch per provocare una reazione dei repubblicani, mettendo una trappola nel processo.
Óglach (Volontario) Jo-Jo O’Connor era sposato e padre di tre bambini piccoli quando alcuni uomini armati lo uccisero fuori dalla casa di sua madre nel mese di ottobre del 2000. Nessun gruppo si è assunto la responsabilità per il brutale assassinio, anche se i residenti hanno testimoniato che il gruppo di fuoco apparteneva ai Provisional IRA. La sua uccisione non solo ha causato indicibili sofferenze alla sua famiglia, ma fece anche risorgere le stesse emozioni di quando il nonno di Joe, Francisco Notarantonio, venne ucciso dall’UDA nel 1987. Francisco era un ex volontario dell’IRA, un prigioniero politico e un rispettato repubblicano. I Provisional hanno negato qualsiasi coinvolgimento nella morte di Joe.
Assordante il silenzio dei politici nazionalisti, dei leader di comunità e della Chiesa cattolica riguardo all’uccisione di Joe, ma anche sull’intimidazione contro la sua famiglia e, ora, sulla spregevole distruzione della tomba di Joe. Dall’esecuzione di Joe, gli attivisti repubblicani che sono in disaccordo con la strategia politica dello Sinn Féin hanno continuato ad essere rapiti, picchiati e minacciati dai Provisional. Coloro che rifiutano di essere intimiditi vengono diffamati. Questo tipo di demonizzazione rende la profanazione della tomba di Joe molto più facile per i criminali. I repubblicani hanno il legittimo diritto di avere una visione politica che si oppone allo Sinn Féin, e tale diritto non deve essere censurato, né condannato.
Sulla base di tale diritto fondamentale, faccio appello al Movimento dei Provisional di ammettere finalmente l’uccisione di Jo-Jo. Dopo tutto, la sua famiglia ha sofferto immensamente dopo la sua morte, e come tutti gli altri hanno diritto ad una spiegazione dei motivi per cui è stato ucciso. Faccio appello anche a coloro che hanno devastato la tomba di Joe di cessare questi attacchi subito, è a dir poco di una campagna di odio contro Joe e la sua famiglia! Infine, per conto della famiglia di Joe, chiedo donazioni per aiutare il restauro della tomba di Jo-Jo. Affinché i suoi parenti e gli altri possano pregare sul suo ultimo luogo di riposo.

Appeal On Behalf Of The O’Connor Family
At the weekend, a Criminal gang who have held the Ballymurphy community in West Belfast under siege with their Anti-Social actions for over six years, became involved in a number of drug-fuelled attacks on the grave of former Ballymurphy resident and the Belfast Commander of the RIRA, Jo-Jo O’Connor. The gang began with chopping the heads of two Holy Statues, place there by Joe’s relatives. Joe’s grave is in the City Cemetery across the road from Ballymurphy and has been subjected to repeated attacks over the last few years.
The Gang responsible who call themselves; ‘The Rat Pack’ have regularly abused and attacked Joe’s relatives for over six years. A number of homes have been stoned, set on fire with petrol-bombs and hoax bombs left outside. Given the killing of her beloved son and the other attacks, his mother Margaret felt she had no option but to leave her home and her community in Ballymurphy and move to another district. In spite of a mountain of evidence, a host of community and political groups including Sinn Féin and the SDLP refused to help the O’Connor family end the intimidation. Not only was this Gang involved in attacking the O’Connor’s, they were also deeply involved in breaking into the homes of local people, stealing whatever they could including their cars, drug-dealing and beating anyone who challenged them.
Not surprisingly, some Gang members were quickly released after repeated arrests to continue their reign of terror across West Belfast, confirming local suspicions that they had agreed to ‘work’ as Informers for the RUC/PSNI in return for no action taken against them. Throughout the recent Conflict, many Criminals worked for the Political Police and passed on information about Republicans for financial gain and a free-hand to continue their Anti-Community activities. This age-old practise has not changed one iota, as Assistant Chief Constable of the PSNI, Judith Gillespe stated in 2005; ‘That we use ‘Covert Human Intelligence Sources’. Throughout this reign of terror, the Rat Pack have gone unchallenged by the RUC/PSNI. Only last week, Matt Baggot announced that he was planning a ‘Crackdown’ on Republicans who carry out ‘punishment attacks’. It doesn’t take a genius to consider that after the desecration of Jo-Jo’s grave was engineered by Special Branch Handlers to provoke this very reaction from Republicans, setting a trap in the process.
Óglach Jo-Jo O’Connor was married and a father of three young children when he was shot-dead outside his Mother’s home in October, 2000 by a number of gunmen. No group admitted responsibility for the brutal shooting, although local residents testified that they belonged to the Provisional IRA. His unprovoked killing not only caused his family unbelievable suffering but also resurrected the same emotions when Joe’s Grandfather, Francisco was gunned down by the UDA in 1987. Francisco was a former IRA Volunteer, Political Prisoner and a respected Republican. Ever since, the Provisionals have denied any involvement in Joe’s death.
The deafening silence from Nationalist Politicians, Community Leaders and the Catholic Church concerning Joe’s killing but also the gross intimidation of his family and now, the despicable destruction of Joe’s grave. Since Joe’s execution, Republican Activists who disagree with Sinn Féin’s political strategy have continued to be abducted, beaten and threatened by the Provisionals. Those who refuse to be intimidated are felon-set, smeared and vilified. This type of demonisation makes the desecration of Joe’s grave all the more easier for Criminals. Republicans have a legitimate right to hold a political view that opposes Sinn Féin’s position and that right should not be censored nor condemned.
Based on that fundamental right, I’m appealing for the Provisional Movement to finally admit the shooting of Jo-Jo. After all, his family have suffered immensely since his death, they like everyone else have a right to an explanation as to why he was gunned down. I also appeal to those who wrecked Joe’s grave to cease these attacks immediately, it is nothing short of a hate campaign directed at Joe and his family! Finally on behalf of Joe’s family, I ask for donations to help restore Jo-Jo’s grave. So that his relatives and others can pay their respects at his final resting place.
