La polizia in assetto anti sommossa è stata posizionata nella cittadina a maggioranza cattolica di Rasharkin, dopo il lancio di bottiglie molotov in seguito al passaggio, relativamente pacifico, della parata composta da 41 bande.
C’erano timori per nuove violenze nel corso della serata e molti agenti di polizia, anche con cani poliziotto, sono rimasti sul luogo della parata. Era presente anche il gruppo di supporto tattico della PSNI.
Massiccia la presenza di polizia durante la parata, con dozzine di Land Rover e numerosi agenti visibili lungo il percorso.
Mentre la marcia è iniziata abbastanza pacificamente ci sono stati alcuni disordini durante la sera, con bottiglie ed altri oggetti lanciati contro i partecipanti da parte dei contestatori, allineati lungo le strade e con cartelli che chiedono la fine delle marce settarie.
Palline da golf sono state lanciate quando le ultime bande hanno attraversato la cittadina.
I dimostranti sono stati tenuti lontani dalle barriere e gli agenti di polizia ed il personale civile si sono assicurati il veloce passaggio delle bande senza provocare diatribe con i contestatori.
Comunque, un certo numero di bande hanno suonato The Sash quando si sono trovate vicino ai dimostranti ed hanno anche sventolato emblemi paramilitari durante la processione (infrangendo una delle regole imposte dalla Commissione Parate, Ndt).
Alcuni residenti hanno segnalato danneggiamenti alle proprietà e ad autovetture, compiute dai sostenitori delle bande.
Un ragazzo, che non ha fornito le sue generalità, ha detto che la sua vettura è stata presa a calci da un lealista, mentre cercava di ritornare a casa.
La Commissione Parate aveva chiesto tranquillità durante la parata.
Il suo consiglio direttivo si era detto cosciente delle tensioni presenti nella zona. La Commissione aveva ordinato la rimozione di qualsiasi emblema paramilitare dalla marcia.
Aveva anche ridotto il numero dei contestatori a 130 (dai 200 inizialmente previsti, Ndt), compresi gli accompagnatori.
Negli ultimi mesi, a Rasharkin, le tensioni settarie erano cresciute esponenzialmente.
Lo Sinn Fein aveva obiettato che, a causa dei problemi attuali, il permesso alla parata andava negato.
Il DUP, invece, aveva affermato il diritto di marciare delle bande.
Trouble flares at loyalist band parade in Rasharkin
Riot police were deployed to the mainly nationalist village of Rasharkin after petrol bombs were thrown following the relatively peaceful parade of over 40 loyalist bands.
There were fears there would be further violent scenes throughout the night and a large number of police, including police dogs and members of the PSNI tactical support group, remained at the scene.
There was a heavy police presence throughout the march, with several dozen police Land Rovers and high numbers of the tactical support unit officers visible.
While the march began relatively peacefully there was unrest at several points throughout the evening, with bottles and other items thrown at the parade as it passed the protesters, who lined the streets holding placards calling for an end to sectarian marches.
Some golf balls were thrown as the last of the bands passed through the village.
The demonstrators were held back from the parade by barricades and police officers and marshals were on hand to ensure the bands moved quickly through the street without engaging with the protesters.
However, a number of bands played The Sash as they passed by the protesters and carried paramilitary flags during the procession.
Several residents also reported damage to property and vehicles by supporters of the bands.
One 17-year-old youth, who did not want to be named, said his car was kicked by a loyalist supporter as he tried to get to his home.
The Parades Commission had appealed for calm ahead of the parade.
Its chair said it was clear there were serious tensions in the area. The commission had ruled that no paramilitary displays or emblems were to be included in the march.
It also limited the number on protest to 130, including marshals.
There have been sectarian tensions in the Rasharkin over recent months.
Sinn Fein argued that the march should not have been permitted in light of the current problems.
The DUP said the bands had a right to parade.
