Più di trenta persone hanno lanciato fiale puzzolenti, suonato fischietti e gridato slogan contro la polizia al Tower Hotel.
Il disturbo è stato così forte che l’incontro è stato abbandonato. Non ci sono stati arresti.
L’ispettore John Burrows ha detto che le azioni erano oltre i vincoli di un processo pacifico.
“Questo comportamento infantile non fermerà la polizia di Derry dall’espletare il proprio lavoro”, ha affermato.
La protesta è stata pubblicizzata sui siti Internet repubblicani. In un messaggio si legge che la protesta sarebbe organizzata dal 32 County Sovereignty Movement insieme ad altre organizzazioni repubblicane. La protesta sarebbe stata progettata per evidenziare una “campagna di persecuzione” contro i repubblicani.
I poteri di anti-terrorismo dovevano essere discussi durante l’incontro, dopo che nelle ultime 12 settimane nella città di Derry sono state eseguite oltre 700 stop-and-search (fermo della persona e perquisizione).
Il parlamentare dello SDLP, Pat Ramsey, ha affermato: “Questa gente parla di processo democratico e di mancanza di responsabilità ma l’incontro era un’ulteriore possibilità per la gente di porre domande serie e commentare la polizia su numerosi argomenti. Comunque, gli è stato impedito di fare così dai dissidenti il cui comportamento ha costretto l’interruzione dell’incontro.
“Questi dissidenti, che hanno interrotto la riunione per il loro ristretto modo di agire, non rappresentano la gente di Derry. Tutto ciò che possono offrire sono tattiche intimidatorie per cercare di spaventare la gente che pretendono di rappresentare”.
Sempre oggi, la Real IRA si è assunta la responsabilità di aver spedito proiettili ai lavoratori dell’Ulster Bank a Derry, i cui parenti lavorano nelle forze di sicurezza.
Dissidents stop DPP meeting
Over thirty dissident supporters tossed stink bombs, blew whistles and shouted anti-police slogans at the meeting in the Tower Hotel.
Such was the disruption the meeting was abandoned. No one was arrested.
Inspector John Burrows said the actions were beyond the bounds of a peaceful process.
“This type of juvenile behaviour will not prevent police in Derry from doing their job,” he said.
The planned protest had been advertised on dissident republican websites. A posting said the protest was planned by the 32 County Sovereignty Committee in tandem with other republican organisations. The dissidents said their protest was designed to highlight a “harassment campaign” against republicans.
Anti-terrorism powers were due to be discussed at the meeting after there were 700 stop and search incidents in Londonderry in the past twelve weeks.
SDLP MLA, Pat Ramsey said: “These people talk about the democratic process and the lack of accountability but this meeting was a further chance for the general public to give serious questions and comments to the police on a whole range of issue. However, they were prevented from doing so by the dissidents as their behaviour forced the meeting to be stopped.
“These dissidents, who disrupted this meeting for their own, narrow minded agenda, do not represent the people of Derry. All they could offer was intimidating tactics to attempt to scare the members of the public they are pretending to represent.”
Earlier today, the Real IRA claimed responsibility for sending bullets to workers at Ulster Bank in Londonderry who have relatives in the security forces.
