Un monumento di granito in onore dell’ex membro dell’IRA e hunger striker Brendan “The Dark” Hughes è stato distrutto pochi giorni dopo essere stato svelato.
La panchina in pietra era stata commissionata dalla famiglia e gli amici di Hughes in occasione del terzo anniversario della sua morte, avvenuta il 16 febbraio 2008.
Il memoriale era stato eretto sulle Cooley mountains nella Contea di Louth, dove Hughes aveva chiesto che le sue ceneri fossero disperse.
Una volta era amico del presidente dello Sinn Fein, Gerry Adams, negli ultimi anni di vita Hughes divenne un dichiarato oppositore della strategia politica del partito.
Prima della sua morte, Hughes diede interviste registrate riguardo alla sua appartenenza all’IRA, divenute successivamente parte del libro Voices From The Grave di Ed Moloney.
Domenica scorsa Shona e Paul Hughes, nipoti di “The Dark”, hanno svelato la panchina.
Tuttavia, quando ieri (15 febbraio, Ndt) un membro della famiglia è tornato a visitare il luogo, la panchina era stata distrutta.
Terry Hughes, fratello di Brendan, ha detto che la famiglia non comprende il motivo per cui il monumento è stato attaccato.
“Abbiamo parlato con gli abitanti della zona prima di andare avanti con i nostri piani per un memoriale a Brendan e la risposta era stata molto positiva.
“Non ci sono state obiezioni”, ha detto.
“Il monumento era un pezzo importante. Era fatto di solido granito e c’è voluta notevole forza per fare quel tipo di danno.
“Chi ha fatto questo deve essere venuto armato con una mazza o qualcosa di simile, per cui sembra essere stato un atto intenzionale e premeditato.
“E’ molto doloroso per la nostra famiglia vedere questo, alla vigilia della ricorrenza per la morte di Brendan”.

Brendan Hughes memorial vandalised
The heavy stone bench was commissioned by family and friends of the late IRA member to mark the third anniversary of his death today.
It had been placed in the Cooley mountains in Co. Louth where Hughes, pictured, had requested that his ashes be scattered.
A one-time close friend of Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, Hughes became an outspoken opponent of the party’s political strategy in his later years.
Prior to his death he gave taped interviews about his time in the IRA which later formed part of Ed Moloney’s book Voices From The Grave, pictured above.
On Sunday Hughes’s grandchildren Shona and Paul Hughes unveiled the bench.
However, when a family member went back to visit the spot yesterday the bench had been vandalised.
The former IRA man’s brother Terry Hughes said the family could see no obvious reason why the monument had been attacked.
“We had spoken to local people before we went ahead with our plans for a memorial to Brendan and the response had been very positive.
There were no objections,” he said.
“The monument was quite a significant piece. It was made of solid granite and it would have taken considerable force to do that kind of damage”.
“Whoever did this must have came armed with a sledgehammer or something similar so it appears to have been a very deliberate premeditated act.
“It’s very distressing for our family that someone has done this on the eve of Brendan’s anniversary”.
