La prima di Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey (Bernadette: Note di un viaggio politico) è stata vista al Galway Film Fleadh, dove ha vinto il premio come miglior documentario.
Il documentario, diretto da Lelia Doolan, combina riprese di archivio della giovane e focosa McAliskey con le interviste realizzate negli ultimi anni. La produzione del film è durata nove anni.
C’è sicuramente abbastanza materiale per meritare un lungo documentario.
La donna di Coalisland ha guadagnato importanza a Derry durante la Battaglia del Bogside dell’agosto 1969. La giovane donna ricevette una condanna a nove mesi di carcere per incitamento ai disordini, trascorrendone quattro dietro alle sbarre.
Tra i fondatori di People’s Democracy, la Devlin-McAliskey – come è conosciuta adesso – venne eletta parlamentare a soli 21 anni. E’ ancora la donna più giovane ad aver conquistato un seggio alla Casa dei Comuni.
Viene ricordata per aver attraversato tutta la Casa per colpire Reginald Malding, dopo che il politico aveva affermato che i paracadutisti avevano aperto il fuoco durante la Bloody Sunday “per atodifesa”.
Bernadette perse il seggio nel 1974, nello stesso anno in cui ha contribuito a fondare l’Irish Republican Socialist Party, da cui si dimise l’anno seguente.
Questo non l’ha tolta dalla vita pubblica o dall’essere bersaglio dei paramilitari. Nel 1981 Bernadette e suo marito Michael furono colpiti dai lealisti – lei da otto proiettili, lui da nove. Riuscirono entrambi a cavarsela.
Bernadette McAliskey è ancora molto attiva nella vita pubblica. Recentemente ha guidato un incontro a Derry sulla situazione dei prigionieri repubblicani a Maghaberry ed è fondatrice del South Tyrone Empowerment Programme (STEP).
Bernadette illustra tutti questi argomenti ed il suo atteggiamento nello sviluppo del processo di pace nel documentario “Note di un viaggio politico”.
La regista Lelia Dooland riassume gli 87 minuti del documentario affermando che “dare ai giovani, ma anche ai più anziani, in un periodo di politica distaccata, una possibilità di vedere che ci sono modi di pensare aperti a loro che possono permettergli di esercitare la propria libertà di cittadini e di incoraggiarli”.

McAliskey documentary premieres
Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey premiered last week at the Galway Film Fleadh.
The documentary, directed by Lelia Doolan, mixes archive footage of the younger, firebrand McAliskey with interviews conducted over the last several years. In total the film has been in production for nine years.
There is certainly enough material to merit a feature length documentary.
The Coalisland woman rose to prominence in Derry during the Battle of the Bogside, August 1969. The young Tyrone woman received a nine month prison term for incitement to riot, serving four.
A founding member of the People’s Democracy, Mrs Devlin-McAliskey, as she is now known was elected MP aged 21 years-old. She is still the youngest ever female to win a seat in the House of Commons.
Her time there is best remembered for crossing the floor of the House to punch Reginald Malding after he claimed the Paratroopers had opened fire on Bloody Sunday “in self defence.”
Bernadette lost her seat in Parliament in 1974, the same year she co-founded the Irish Republican Socialist Party, from which she resigned one year later.
This did not remove her from public life or indeed from being targeted by paramilitaries. In 1981 Bernadette and husband Michael were shot, her eight times, him nine, by loyalists; they narrowly escaped with their lives.
Bernadette McAliskey is still active in public live. She recently chaired a meeting in Derry on the plight of republican prisoners at Maghaberry and is a founding member of the South Tyrone Empowerment Programme (STEP).
Bernadette addresses all of these issues and topics as well as her attitude to the developing peace process in ‘Notes on a Political Journey.’
The director of ‘Bernadette…’, Lelia Doolan summed up the 87 minute documentary as: “Giving younger people, and older viewers as well, in a time of bland politics, a chance to see that there are ways of thinking open to them that allow them to exercise their freedom as citizens and encourage them.”
