Il comandante della polizia Matt Baggott ha condannato l’attacco contro due agenti, rimasti feriti nell’esplosione di un ordigno fuori da un negozio di giocattoli a Newtownabbey
Un agente ha subito ecchimosi e lividi alla testa dopo essere stato colpito dai calcinacci lanciati in aria dallo scoppio.
Il secondo poliziotto ha danni all’apparato uditivo mentre due membri del perosnale – che assistevano all’intervento – sono stati curati per lo shock subito.
Baggott ha condannato sia questo incidente di Newtownabbey che quello eseguito dalla Real IRA contro le abitazioni di personale PSNI avvenuto a Claudy questa settimana.
“Queste persone non solo minacciano le vite degli agenti di polizia e di chi lavora insieme a noi, ma mettono in pericolo le vite delle persone comuni”.
Il presidente del Northern Ireland Police Board Brian Rea chiede a chiunque abbia informazioni su entrambi gli episodi di mettersi in contatto con la polizia.
“Questi poliziotti stavano semplicemente svolgendo il proprio lavoro ed è completamente inaccettabile che siano divenuti dei bersagli.
“Gli autori di questo attacco e quelli nel Nord Ovest durante la settimana devono essere fermati”, ha affermato.
Il Comandante d’Area, l’Ispettore Capo Derek McCamley, ha detto che è stata avviata una completa investigazione.
“Ci sono alcune speculazioni sui respnsabili di questo attacco, tuttavia è troppo presto per esserne certi, ma seguiremo tutte le possibili linee d’inchiesta.
“E’ stato un attacco deplorevole, non solo contro due agenti che rispondevano ad una richiesta di assistenza, ma anche contro due persone comuni.
“Ho parlato con i miei agenti questa mattina e sono stato colpito dalla loro determinazione a continuare a fornire il servizio personale, professionale e protettivo che la comunità vuole e merita.
“I responsabili di questo attacco sono individui codardi che cercano solamente di portare devastazione e dolore alla loro stessa comunità. Non ci faremo fermare dal nostro lavoro di mantenere sicura la comunità”.
Il sindaco di Newtownabbey Billy Webb si dice “assolutamente sconvolto dalla brutalità di questo attacco”.
Webb, consigliere dell’Alliance Party, prosegue: “I miei pensieri vanno ai poliziotti feriti e spero possano fare un rapido e completo recupero.
“Si è trattato di un attacco vile e c’è repulsione nella comunità per questa notizia.
“Dobbiamo alla polizia un’immensa gratitudine per il coraggio che mostra nel proprio lavoro e dovrebbe essergli permesso di svolgere il proprio lavoro senza timori di attacchi come questo”.
La polizia desidera interrogare chiunque possa aver visto delle persone a Care Home o lungo la via di accesso o nella zona del parcheggio del centro commerciale di Mill Road tra le 23:45 di giovedì e le 12:15 di venerdì mattina.
Gli inquirenti sono interessati anche a chi potrebbe aver visto qualcuno lasciare la zona diretto verso il quartiere di Bawnmore.

PSNI officers hurt in Antrim blast
PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott has condemned the attack on two police officers who were injured in the explosion of a device outside a toy store in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim.
One officer has swelling and bruising to the head after he was hit by falling debris which was thrown into the air during the explosion.
The second officer has damaged hearing following the blast, while two members of staff – who also attended the alarm call – were treated for shock.
Mr Baggott condemned the incident in Newtownabbey, as well as the Real IRA attack on the homes of police personnel in Co Londonderry earlier this week.
“These people not only threaten the lives of police officers and those who work alongside us, they also endanger the lives of members of the public.
Chair of the Northern Ireland Police Board Brian Rea has urged anyone with information about either of the attacks to tell to police.
“These officers were simply doing their job and it is totally unacceptable that they were targeted in this way.
“The people who carried out this attack and the attacks in the North West during the week must be stopped,” he said.
Area Commander, Chief Inspector Derek McCamley, said a full investigation has been launched.
“There has been some speculation about who is behind this attack however it is much too early to say but we will follow all possible lines of enquiry.
“This was a despicable attack, not only on police officers responding to a call for assistance but also on two members of the public.
“I have spoken with my officers this morning and have been struck by their steadfast determination to continue providing the personal, professional and protective service the community want and deserve.
“Those behind this attack are cowardly individuals who only seek to bring devastation and harm to their own community. We will not be deterred from our job of keeping the community safe.”
Mayor of Newtownabbey Billy Webb said he was “absolutely appalled at the brutality of this attack.”
The Alliance Councillor said: “My thoughts are with the injured officers and I hope that they make a full and quick recovery.
“This was a cold and cowardly attack and there is revulsion in the community at news of this.
“We owe the police massive gratitude for the courage they show in their work and they should be allowed to go about their vital work without fear of attacks like this.”
Police say they want to speak to anyone who may have seen any person in the area of the Care Home or its access road or in the area of the car park of commercial premises in the Mill Road between 11.45pm on Thursday and 12.15am on Friday.
They also appeal to anyone who may have seen any person making their way from the area of the care home into the Bawnmore Estate.
