Durkan chiede dibattito su Irlanda Unita

Il leader dello SDLP Mark Durkan ha chiesto ai partiti di riunirsi ancora per discutere dell’unità irlandese

Il parlamentare di Foyle ha detto che la discussione sull’unità deve andare oltre la retorica occasionale senza alcun significato reale.

Durkan ha affermato all’annuale conferenza dell’area giovanile dello SDLP (SDLP Youth Conference), tenutasi a Belfast sabato, che era importante creare una visione del ventunesimo secolo per l’integrazione, che non fosse solo raddrizzare torti o affrontare le lamentazioni, ma riguardante un senso del destino e uno scopo.

“Lo SDLP appoggia al 100% il Good Friday Agreement (Accordo del Venerdì Santo). Ma vogliamo anche allo stesso modo un’Irlanda unita”, ha affermato.

“Siamo l’unico partito che ha esposto una chiara visione di come vediamo l’unità irlandese nel contesto dell’Accordo e di come vediamo l’Accordo nel contesto dell’Irlanda unita.

“Nessun altro partito lo ha fatto; nessun altro partito ha risposto così.

“Vorrei chiamare tutti i partiti nazionalisti ad unirsi e aderire a questo argomento”.

Sull’attuale situazione nel Nord, Durkan osserva come sia presente un crescente senso di delusione per la qualità del governo decentrato.

“Per lo SDLP è molto chiaro che la devolution in questa fase è di scarso rendimento, con troppi ritardi e senza abbastanza strategia. Le persone vengono deluse”, ha aggiunto.

“La gente ha investito grande speranza nel decentramento ma stiamo ricevendo una legislazione ‘karaoke’ con un’azione locale.

“Ma questo non è solo criticare lo Sinn Fein e il DUP.

“La prossima settimana lo SDLP pubblicherà un inizio di rapporto che mostrerà quanto poco è stato raggiunto”.

Durkan calls for discussions on Irish unity

SDLP Leader Mark Durkan has called on all parties to come together again to discuss the issue of Irish unity.

The Foyle MP said talk around unity must move beyond occasional rhetoric with no real meaning.

Mr Durkan told the annual SDLP Youth Conference in Belfast on Saturday that it was important to create a 21st century vision for integration that is not just about righting wrongs or addressing grievances, but about a sense of destiny and purpose.

“The SDLP is 100% for the Good Friday Agreement. We are also 100% cent for a united Ireland,” he said.

“We are the only party that has set out a clear view that addresses how we see Irish unity in the context of the Agreement and how we see the Agreement in the context of Irish unity.

“No other party has done this; no other party has answered this.

“I would call on all nationalist parties to get together and address this issue.”

On current political situation in the north, Mr Durkan maintained there is a growing sense of disappointment at the quality of devolved government.

“The SDLP are very clear that devolution in this stage is underachieving and underperforming with too much stroke and not enough strategy. People are being let down,” he added.

“The public invested great hope in devolution but instead all we are getting karaoke legislation with a local action.

“But this is not just about criticising Sinn Fein and the DUP.

“In the next week the SDLP will publish a start of term report which points out how little has been achieved.”
