Durkan lascerà la guida dello SDLP

Si rincorrono ipotesi per scoprire chi sostituirà Mark Durkan alla presidenza dello SDLP

Il politico ha confermato la sua intenzione di lasciare la dirigenza dopo le prossime Elezioni Generali – se si aggiudicasse nuovamente il seggio a Westminster.

I possibili candidati alla successione sono l’attuale vice di Durkan e parlamentare di South Belfast, Alasdair McDonnell, il parlamentare di North Belfast, Alban Maginness, e Margaret Ritchie, attualmente ministro per lo Sviluppo Sociale.

Mark Durkan, 49 anni, subentrò a John Hume alla guida dello SDLP nel 2001.

Un portavoce dello SDLP ha detto di Durkan: “Nel futuro continuerà a giocare un ruolo importante nella dirigenza del partito e sarà completamente impegnato nello SDLP, nel sostegno al Good Friday Agreement e agli elettori.

“Mentre lo SDLP si appresta a celebrare il 40.mo anniversario di costituzione, l’anno prossimo, il partito intende presentare nuove facce per le elezioni di Westminster, con un occhio al governo locale e alle elezioni per l’Assemblea del 2011”, ha aggiunto. “Il cambiamento della guida del partito sarà parte di questa transizione.

“Il processo di cambiamento nella guida del partito verrà affrontata in maniera sensibile e ordinata”.

SDLP’s Mark Durkan to step down

Speculation has started as to who will replace Mark Durkan as leader of the SDLP.

He has confirmed his intention to stand down after the next General Election – if he retains his Westminster seat.

It is thought the frontrunners are the party’s deputy leader and South Belfast MP Alasdair McDonnell, the North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness and the Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie.

49-year-old Mr Durkan replaced John Hume as leader of the SDLP in 2001.

An SDLP spokesman said of Mr Durkan: “In the future he will continue to play a strong role in the leadership of the party and will remain fully committed to the SDLP, the Good Friday Agreement and his constituents.”

“As the SDLP moves to celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, the party intends to bring forward a number of new faces for the Westminster election and with an eye to local government and Assembly elections in 2011.” he added, “The change in leadership of the party will be part of this transition.

“The process of change in the party leadership will now be addressed in a sensible and orderly fashion.”
