Durkan si concentra su Westminster

Il parlamentare di Foyle, Mark Durkan, ha promesso di concentrare maggiormente i suoi sforzi su Westminster se dovesse venire eletto nuovamente alle elezioni generali del prossimo anno.

Durkan ha scioccato i sostenitori con l’annuncio di lasciare il timone del comando dello SDLP dopo le elezioni.

Ma ha detto di non voler tornare indietro in futuro.

“Il motivo per cui mi concentro su Westminster è che se – sulla base del doppio mandato – decidessi di non andare a Westminister, molte persone direbbero che mi stavo sottraendo alla sfida nella circoscrizione di Foyle oppure che lo SDLP non può vincere il seggio”, ha detto il parlamentare.

“Devo annunciare la mia lotta per le elezioni di Westminster.

“Ci sono gravi problemi riguardanti l’economia che sarenno affrontati maggiormente a Westminister rispetto che a Stormont – in termini di interessi per Derry e per i macro interessi economici e sociali di questa regione – credo sia meglio agire a Westminster”, ha proseguito Durkan.

“Non è dove vorrei essere, nello schema delle cose – infatti il mio cuore e la mia testa sono con le istituzioni locali, ma so che in condizioni di crisi bancaria, in un periodo di problemi riguardanti la sicurezza sociale, in termini di impatto sul bilancio del Nordirlanda – non solo sui soldi destinati all’Esecutivo ma anche su ciò che è permesso fare con quel denaro – questi saranno problemi da affrontare a Westminster.

“Sento che il ruolo più importante, singolo e distintivo che posso recitare nei prossimi anni sarà là”.

MP to concentrate on Westminster

FOYLE MP Mark Durkan has vowed to concentrate more heavily on Westminster should he be successfully re-elected in a general election next year.

Mr Durkan shocked supporters with the announcement he would step down as SDLP leader after the election.

But he said he has no intention of taking a back seat in future.

“My reason for concentrating at a personal level on Westminster is that if – on the basis of the dual mandate – that I decided not to go to Westminster, all sorts of people would have said that I was ducking out of a challenge in Foyle or that the SDLP couldn’t win the seat here,” said the local MP.

“I had to make the call to fight the Westminster election.

“In the circumstances where there are serious issues affecting this economy that are going to be unfortunately decided more at Westminster than they are at Stormont – in terms of Derry’s interests and in terms of the wider economic and social interests of this region – I believe I am best spending the coming period at Westminster,” he added.

“Its not where I want to be in the overall scheme of things – my heart and head is fully with the institutions here but I know in terms of the banking crisis, in terms of the issues that we are going to face with social security, in terms of the impact on the Northern Ireland budget – not just the money the Executive will have but what its allowed to do with that money – that those are going to be major issues at Westminster.

“I feel the biggest, single, distinctive role that I can play in the next few years is going to be there.”
