Duro scontro Peter Robinson – Jim Allister a Stormont

Robinson and Allister clash at Stormont

There have been heated exchanges between DUP leader Peter Robinson and TUV leader Jim Allister at Stormont.

Jim Allister - Peter RobinsonThe politicians clashed after the issue of the Maze Peace Centre was raised by Mr Allister during topical questions to the First Minister on Monday afternoon.

He asked: “Can the First Minister gave an assurance particularly to innocent victims who were greatly relieved by his u-turn on the implementation of the Maze project that that stance will not be traded either in the Haass talks or anywhere else?”

Mr Robinson replied: “Can I make it very clear to him that I wouldn’t characterise the position I have adopted as being a u-turn the Ulster Unionist Party placed the peace centre in the Maze complex and I’ve indicated it would be unwise for Northern Ireland to continue with a peace centre which itself was going to be a cause of division.”

The DUP leader then went on to accuse Mr Allister of “secretly” selling land to republicans in Co Fermanagh while “being tough” with republicans in the Assembly.

Mr Robinson continued: “He chides me for doing business with republicans, but then secretly and outside of the House, the member, as the executor of a will, is selling land to republicans in County Fermanagh to benefit his own family.”

Jim Allister said: “I am not the executor. That is a damnable lie.”

He later asked the Speaker, Willie Hay, what protection exists for an MLA who is “the victim of a malicious falsehood such as I was today”.

The North Antrim representative added: “The truth is that I am neither the executor nor the beneficiary of any such will, nor am I involved in any such land sales.”

Mr Hay said he will consult Hansard and come back to Mr Allister.

He continued: “Let me say also to the Member that — I do not care what the issue might be in this House for Members — it is wrong for any Member to try to shout down the Chair.”

Plans to build a peace centre at the former site of the Maze prison were shelved last month after the DUP withdrew its support for the controversial project.
