Il murales raffigurante la leggenda del calcio nordirlandese George Best è stato definitivamente sostituito da un paramilitare dell’UVF, dopo che il lavoro era stato bloccato per 15 giorni a causa delle lamentele della popolazione
A inizio settembre era emerso che il tributo a George Best a Inverwood Court a Sydenham stava per essere cancellato e sostituito dall’immagine di un paramilitare lealista.
Un uomo armato dell’UVF adesso è sul murales, insieme ad una citazione di Martin Luther King che recita: “La libertà non è mai concessa liberamente dall’oppressore, deve essere richiesta dagli oppressi”.
Il consigliere del PUP, braccio politico dell’Ulster Volunteer Force, John Kyle, si è detto “molto deluso” per lo sviluppo della situazione. Settimana scorsa aveva detto a UTV che la realizzazione del murales era stata sospesa perché c’erano discussioni in corso con i responsabili del progetto per apportare delle modifiche.
Tuttavia domenica è emerso che il murales era stato terminato.
Kyle ha detto: “Penso che sia una vergogna sostituire un murales di George Best con un bandito incappucciato. Non credo sia quello che vuole la comunità di East Belfast.
“Non credo rappresenti loro o il loro punto di vista. Vogliono guardare al futuro e crearlo positivo e prospero”.
Ha descritto il nuovo murales paramilitare come un “passo indietro”.
Il consigliere lealista ha detto di non essere in contatto con i responsabili del progetto, ma di aver notato sabato che il lavoro era stato concluso.
Ha aggiunto che il PUP aveva detto sin dall’inizio che la sostituzione del murales di George Best era “un passo indietro” e si sono opposti al progetto.
Il parlamentare dell’Alliance Party, Chris Little, ha detto che il nuovo murales riesce solamente a glorificare la violenza.
“È inaccettabile che un talento di classe mondiale come George Best sia stato sostituito da un paramilitare armato” ha affermato.
“I rappresentanti politici hanno giustamente condannato la glorificazione del terrorismo nelle ultime settimane, e noi dobbiamo restare uniti e chiari nel rifiuto di tutti i murales di questo tipo – se intendiamo costruire una società sicura e inclusiva per tutti”.
Ha aggiunto: ” Questo murales è contro i diritti civili e contro East Belfast. Dovrebbe essere rimpiazzato immediatamente”.
Il murales in onore di George Best fu realizzato tre anni come parte di un programma guidato dal Belfast City Council per contrastare il settarismo.
Domenica scorsa il parlamentare del DUP per East Belfast, Robin Newton, ha detto che l’ex murales era stato “pagato con denaro pubblico dei contribuenti di Belfast”.
“È quindi profondamente deludente che nel 50° anniversario della prima partita di George Best con il Manchester United questo segno di rispetto per le sue doti calcistiche sia stato cancellato. Tanto peggio che sia avvenuto nella parte di città che lui chiamava casa” ha aggiunto il politico.
All’inizio di questo mese il Consiglio aveva detto di non essere a conoscenza dei piani per la sostituzione del murales.
Un portavoce ha detto: “Nel 2010, il Belfast City Council , come parte del progetto Peace III «Affrontare le manifestazioni fisiche del settarismo», ha pagato 1.500 sterline per i materiali da utilizzare in un murales in memoria di George Best.
“Questo murales sostituiva un vecchio disegno dell’UVF e fu accolto positivamente dalla comunità.
“Non c’erano accordi in relazione alla concessione di fondi per il progetto originario, su quanto il murales doveva restare visibile.
“Il consiglio non era a conoscenza di piani per la sua sostituzione”.

UVF gunman mural completed at Best site
A mural of Northern Ireland football legend George Best has been replaced with a UVF gunman in east Belfast, after the work was temporarily suspended two weeks ago due to a huge public outcry.
It emerged earlier this month that the tribute to Best, on a wall at Inverwood Court in Sydenham, was being changed to a paramilitary image.
A UVF gunman is now on the wall along with the Martin Luther King quote: ‘Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed’.
PUP councillor Dr John Kyle said that he was “very disappointed” with the development. Last week, he told UTV that the painting of the mural had been suspended amid ongoing discussions with those responsible for carrying out the changes.
However, on Sunday, it emerged that the mural had been completed.
Cllr Kyle said: “I think it is a disgrace to replace a mural of George Best with a hooded gunman. I don’t think that’s what the community of east Belfast wants.
“I don’t think it represents them or represents their views. They want to look at the future and create a positive and prosperous future.”
He described the new paramilitary mural as a “backward step.”
Cllr Kyle said that he had not been in contact with those behind the mural but had noticed the finished work on Saturday.
He added that the PUP had made it clear since work first began on replacing the artwork that they viewed it as “a retrograde step” and were opposed to it.
Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle said that the new mural only succeeds in glorifying violence.
“It is unacceptable that an image which once depicted the world-class talent of George Best has now been replaced by a paramilitary gunman,” he said.
“Political representatives have rightly condemned the glorification of terrorism in recent weeks, and must be united and clear in their rejection of all murals of this kind – if we are to build a safe and inclusive society for everyone in Northern Ireland.”
He added: “This mural is anti-civil rights and anti-East Belfast and should be replaced immediately.”
The Best tribute was created three years ago as part of a regeneration project managed by Belfast City Council to tackle sectarianism.
On Sunday, East Belfast DUP MLA Robin Newton said the former mural was “paid for by public money from Belfast ratepayers”.
“It is therefore deeply disappointing that on the 50th anniversary of George Best’s first game for Manchester United this mark of respect to his football skills is obliterated. All the more so that it should be done in the part of the city he called home,” he added.
Earlier this month, the council said that they were not been aware of plans to replace the artwork.
A spokesman said: “In 2010, Belfast City Council, as part of the council’s PEACE III project ‘Tackling the Physical Manifestations of Sectarianism’< (a>, provided £1,500 towards the material costs of a mural in memory of George Best.
“This mural replaced an old UVF mural and was welcomed by the community at the time.
“There was no stipulation, relating to the granting of funding for the original project, as to how long the mural had to remain in place.
“The council was unaware of any plans to replace it.”
