Un murales di East Belfast rappresentante la leggenda del calcio George Best è stato sostituito con l’immagine di un paramilitare della UVF
Il lavoro è ancora in corso per rimpiazzare il murales dedicato a Georfe Best, dipinto circa tre anni fa a Inverwood Court a Sydenham.
Il murales era stato finanziato con proventi europei come parte del progetto di rigenerazione del territorio voluto dal Belfast City Council per combattere il settarismo.
Il nuovo dipinto mostra un paramilitare della UVF armato, insieme ad una frase di Martin Luther King: “La libertà non viene mai data volontariamente dall’oppressore; deve essere richiesta dall’oppresso”.
Un portavoce del Consiglio ha affermato: “Nel 2010 il Belfast City Council, come parte del progetto PEACE III project “Contrastare le Manifestazioni Fisiche del Settarismo”, ha fornito 1.500 sterline per i costi del materiale usato nel murales in memoria di George Best.
“Questo murales sostituiva un vecchio disegna della UVF e all’epoca era stato ben accolto dalla comunità.
“Non ci sono accordi, in relazione ai fondi forniti per il progetto originale, sul lasso di tempo in cui il murales deve restare visibile.
“Il Consiglio non era a conoscenza dei piani per sostituirlo”.
Il consigliere del PUP John Kyle ha detto di aver avuto numerose conversazioni telefoniche con gli abitanti della zona e, secondo quanto gli hanno comunicato, la grande maggioranza non vuole “il ritorno a questo genere di murales”.
Ha aggiunto: “Credo abbiamo fatto grandi progressi a East Belfast. Abbiamo messaggi molto positivi e penso che la street art dovrebbe comunicare quelle cose positive avvenute qui e celebrare alcuni dei grandi successi ottenuti a East Belfast”.

Il consigliere dell’Alliance Party Alex Webb ha affermato di essere inorridito dalla mossa, descritta come “un passo indietro”, e chiederà ai funzionari comunali di avviare un’indagine.
“La comparsa di quest’immagine paramilitare è un passo indietro, specie dopo tutto il lavoro fatto tre anni fa per cambiare l’immagine.
“Sono inorridito che la celebrazione della vita di George Best sia stata sostituita con una nauseante immagine di un paramilitare armato.
“È inaccettabile che questo murales UVF sia utilizzato per intimidire e per segnare il territorio”.
Ha aggiunto il consigliere: “Questo comportamento minaccioso e divisivo non può essere tollerato in una società che sta cercando di andare oltre e divenire più inclusiva con tutti.
“Quando il Consiglio ha acconsentito a finanziare i progetto come questo per cambiare in meglio le aree e creare spazi condivisi e più accoglienti, la volontà era di rendere permanente il cambiamento.
“Seguirò l’evolversi della situazione con i funzionari comunali per conoscere i termini dell’accordo siglato quando venne dipinta l’immagine di George Best”.

Best mural replaced with UVF gunman
An east Belfast mural of footballing legend George Best has been painted over with an image of a UVF gunman.
Work is underway to replace the Best mural, which was painted around three years ago at Inverwood Court in Sydenham.
The mural was originally funded by European money as part of a regeneration project managed by Belfast City Council to tackle sectarianism.
The new painting shows a UVF gunman, along with a Martin Luther King quote, which states: ‘Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed’.
A council spokesman said: “In 2010, Belfast City Council, as part of the council’s PEACE III project ‘Tackling the Physical Manifestations of Sectarianism’, provided £1,500 towards the material costs of a mural in memory of George Best.
“This mural replaced an old UVF mural and was welcomed by the community at the time.
“There was no stipulation, relating to the granting of funding for the original project, as to how long the mural had to remain in place.
“The council was unaware of any plans to replace it.”
PUP Councillor John Kyle said that he had had a number of telephone conversations with people in the area, and that it was fair to say that the vast majority did not want “this sort of mural going back up.”
He added: “I think we’ve made great progress in east Belfast. We’ve some very positive messages and I think that street art should communicate those positive things that have happened here and celebrate some of the great successes we’ve had in east Belfast.”

Alliance councillor Andrew Webb said he was appalled at the move, which he described as a “backward step”, and would be asking council officials to investigate.
He said: “The appearance of this paramilitary image is a backwards step, particularly after so much hard work went into the reimaging three years ago.
“I am appalled that a celebration of the life of George Best has been replaced by a sickening image of a paramilitary gunman.
“It is unacceptable that this UVF mural is being used to intimidate and act as a territorial marker.”
He added: “This threatening and divisive behaviour is not something that can be tolerated in a society that is seeking to move forward and become more inclusive to all.
“When the council agrees to fund projects such as this to change areas for the better and create more shared and welcoming spaces that are less intimidating, it is done on the basis that the change is permanent.
“I will be following this up with council officials to see what terms were agreed when the George Best image was painted.”
