East Belfast: in corso parata commemorativa per la Battaglia della Somme
Battle of the Somme parade underway
A Battle of the Somme commemoration parade is underway in east Belfast, amid a heavy police presence.
The Short Strand flashpoint area affected by scenes of violence last week saw a stand-off between small numbers of loyalist supporters and nationalist residents.
But while some missiles were thrown, the parade passed by largely peacefully.
It’s making its way to a memorial service on the Belmont Road.
Earlier on Friday, the 95th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme was marked with wreath-laying ceremonies at the cenotaph at Belfast City Hall.
The event commemorates the contribution of the 36th Ulster Division, which had thousands of men killed on the first day of the battle.
