L’Orange Order ha eletto il funzionario dell’Ordine Edward Stevenson al ruolo di Gran Maestro
Subentrerà Robert Saulters, che lo scorso novembre ha annunciato la sua decisione di dimettersi dalla posizione dopo 14 anni.
Il reverendo Alistair Smyth è stato eletto come nuovo Vice Gran Maestro, mentre Drew Nelson è stato riconfermato Gran Segretario, e Bill McKeown è stato eletto Gran Tesoriere.
Stevenson, membro dell’organizzazione per 37 anni ed è stato Grand Master per la sua regione, si è detto “molto onorato e privilegiato” di occupare il suo nuovo ruolo.
Si è impegnato a perseguire un approccio centrato sulle vittime, nella speranza di lottare per i diritti e i risarcimenti delle vittime del terrorismo che crede di essere state ingiustamente trattate.
“Ci sono molte vittime all’interno della nostra famiglia orangista”, ha detto a UTV. “Speriamo di promuovere la loro causa”.
Quando è stato chiesto se l’Orange Order manterrà il suo atteggiamento di non parlare con la Parades Commission sotto la sua guida, Stevenson ha dichiarato: “Continueremo a non cooperare con la Commissione Parate, sperando di stabilire un quadro più giusto ed equo per le parate dei prossimi anni. ”
Il primo ministro Peter Robinson si è congratulato con il neo-eletto Stevenson.
“Invio i miei più sentiti complimenti e migliori auguri a Edward per la sua elezione” ha detto il leader del DUP. “Ha mostrato, per molti anni, fedeltà e dedizione alla causa orangista”.
Nel frattempo Alex Maskey, Sinn Fein, ha detto di sperare che il nuovo leader possa portare un cambiamento nella politica dell’Orange Order.
“L’elezione di un nuovo Gran Maestro fornisce un’opportunità per l’Orange Order di fare finalmente passo avanti e dare il loro contributo al processo di pace”, ha affermato Maskey.
“Nei prossimi giorni scriveremo al nuovo Grand Master Eddie Stevenson, offrendo un incontro a lui e al resto della dirigenza dell’Orange Order”.

New Orange Order Grand Master elected
The Orange Order has elected senior official Edward Stevenson as its new Grand Master.
He will take over from Robert Saulters, who announced his decision to step down from the position after 14 years last November.
Rev Alistair Smyth was elected as new Deputy Grand Master, while Drew Nelson was reappointed Grand Secretary, and Bill McKeown was elected Grand Treasurer.
Mr Stevenson, who has been a member of the organisation for 37 years and was Grand Master for his county, said he is “very honoured and very privileged” to take on his new role.
He has pledged to pursue a victims-centred approach, in which he hopes to fight for the rights and entitlements of victims of terrorism who he believes have been unfairly treated.
“There are many victims within our Orange family,” he told UTV. “We hope to promote their cause.”
When asked if the Orange Order will maintain its stance of not speaking to the Parades Commission under his leadership, Mr Stevenson said: “We will continue not to co-operate with the Parades Commission, and hope to establish a more fair and equitable framework for parading in the years ahead.”
First Minister Peter Robinson has congratulated the newly elected Mr Stevenson.
“I send my warmest congratulations and best wishes to Edward on his election,” the DUP leader said. “He has, over many years, shown faithfulness and devotion to the cause of Orangeism.”
Meanwhile Sinn Fein‘s Alex Maskey said he hopes the new leader can bring about a change in policy.
“The election of a new Grand Master provides an opportunity for the Orange Order to finally step forward and make their contribution to the peace process,” Mr Maskey said.
“In the coming days we will be writing to the new Grand Master Eddie Stevenson offering to meet with him and the rest of the Orange Order leadership.”
