L’Orange Order nell’ultimo periodo ha ricevuto numerose attenzioni dai media
La scorsa settimana, decine di migliaia di persone hanno partecipato e assistito alle manifestazioni per il 12 luglio in paesi e città di tutta la provincia nordirlandese.
Ancora una volta l’evento più importante del calendario degli Ordini Lealisti è stato uno spettacolo e un giorno da ricordare, mentre la famiglia orangista celebrava la nostra cultura ed il nostro fiero partimonio in maniera pacifica e tradizionale.
Tra i luoghi in cui si è respirato l’atmosfera di festa, e liberi da qualsiasi momento di tensione, ci sono state Londonderry, Rasharkin, Carnlough e Glengormley.
Anche un gran numero di turisti hanno assistito alle manifestazioni per la prima volta, godendosi il caldo sole e l’occasione per le famiglie.

Tuttavia, a causa della decisione della Commissione Parate e per la mancanza di tolleranza dei repubblicani, altri attori nella stampa si sono focalizzati prevalentemente sugli eventi della sera del 12 luglio a North Belfast.
Purtroppo la violenza è iniziata dopo che a tre Logge orangiste di Ligoniel è stato impedito di completare il percorso di ritorno, da tempo consolidato e legittimo, lungo Crumlin Road.
Nonostante l’assurda decisione della Commissione Parate, la Gran Loggia aveva abbondantemente spiegato che, anche se la violenza repubblicana aveva permesso la chiusura della strada, la violenza non sarebbe servita a riaprirla. Questo punto di vista è stato condiviso dalla Gran Loggia orangista di Belfast.
Non ho problema di sorta nel condannare coloro che si sono impegnati in attività illegali, tra cui una minoranza che indossava i collaretti orangisti. Il loro comportamento non è stato degno né delle qualifiche di un orangista né del nostro ethos cristiano. Questi fratelli saranno trattati in conformità con le nostre procedure disciplinari interne.
Al contrario i membri dell’Istituzione che hanno cercato di calmare la situazione dovrebbero essere lodati per le loro azioni.
Questo non è stato ampiamente riportato, e neppure si è parlato degli eventi di East Belfast, quando una parata di ritorno è stata attaccata in maniera premeditata da Short Strand.
Tali attacchi sono la prova inaccettabile e chiara che i repubblicani semplicemente non riescono a tollerare la cultura orangista.
Dove sono le prove che il futuro condiviso del movimento repubblicano e dei politici nazionalisti comprende anche noi?
Sono chiaro: la decisione della Commissione Parate riguardante le logge di Ligoniel non è stato un semplice sbaglio o un semplice errore di giudizio.
Credo che sia stata una decisione deliberatamente malevola di un organismo che è mal disposto verso questa Istituzione.
Conoscevano bene le conseguenze del premiare la violenza repubblicana dello scorso anno e, allo stesso tempo, hanno voluto punire le logge che avevano pienamente rispettato la determinazione.
Il fatto che le stesse logge siano scese su un nuovo terreno, impegnandosi direttamente in trattative con la Crumlin Ardoyne Residents Association (CARA) è stato completamente ignorato dalla commissione.
Questi eventi – rafforzati questa settimana dalla mozione in Assemblea – hanno convalidato il punto di vista della famiglia orangista e dell’unionismo nel complesso che la Commissione Parate non è adatta allo scopo e deve assolutamente lasciare immediatamente la scena.
La Gran Loggia ha confermato che parteciperà attivamente all’iniziativa di Haass (diplomatico americano, Ndt), al fine di sostituire questo sistema fondamentalmente difettoso con un migliore processo di regolamentazione.
Affronteremo questo processo con una mentalità positiva, sulla base dei lavori del Comitato consultivo interno e sulle discussioni in corso con i nostri partner del Forum unionista.
Mi fido dei punti di vista del vasto settore delle parate protestanti, compresi gli sette altri Ordini Lealisti e la comunità delle bande musicali, e tutti saranno presi in considerazione.
Non ci devono essere dubbi, l’Istituzione Orangista è impegnata a svolgere il suo ruolo nel rendere l’Irlanda del Nord un luogo migliore per tutti. Tutto quello che chiediamo in cambio è il rispetto e la tolleranza per la nostra cultura e le tradizioni.

Grand Master Edward Stevenson: All we ask is respect and tolerance
THERE has been much media attention in recent days surrounding the Orange Institution.
Last week, tens of thousands of people took part in and attended Twelfth demonstrations in villages, towns and cities across the Province.
Once again the biggest event in the Loyal Orders’ calendar was a spectacle to behold and a day to remember, as the Orange family celebrated our proud culture and heritage in a peaceful and traditional manner.
Among those venues enjoying the carnival atmosphere, and free from any element of trouble, were Londonderry, Rasharkin, Carnlough and Glengormley.
A large number of tourists also witnessed the pageantry for the first time, enjoying the warm sunshine and the family occasion.
We thank the News Letter for their comprehensive and detailed coverage of the occasion, and continuing support.
However, due to the decision of the Parades Commission and a lack of tolerance by republicans, others in the press focused predominantly on events in north Belfast on the Twelfth evening.
Regretfully, violence ensued after three Orange Lodges in Ligoniel were prevented from completing their long established and legitimate return parade along the Crumlin Road.
Despite the preposterous determination from the Parades Commission, Grand Lodge made it abundantly clear that although violence from republicans may have closed the road, violence would not re-open it either. This was a view shared by the County Grand Orange Lodge of Belfast.
I have no equivocation whatsoever in condemning those who engaged in unlawful activity, including a minority wearing Orange collarettes. Their behaviour was not befitting of the qualifications of an Orangeman, nor our Christian ethos. These brethren will be dealt with in accordance with our internal disciplinary procedures.
Conversely, those members of the Institution who tried to calm the situation should be praised for their actions.
This was not widely reported, and neither were events in east Belfast when a return parade was subjected to a premeditated and sustained attack from the Short Strand.
Such attacks are unacceptable and clear evidence yet again that republicans simply cannot tolerate Orange culture.
Where is the evidence from the republican movement and nationalist politicians that their shared future includes us?
I am clear that the decision of the Parades Commission regarding the Ligoniel lodges was not a mere mistake or a simple error of judgement.
I believe it was a deliberately malevolent decision by a body which is ill-disposed towards this Institution.
They knew full well the consequences of rewarding last year’s republican violence and at the same time punishing the lodges who fully complied with the determination.
The fact that the same lodges have since broken new ground by engaging directly in talks with the Crumlin Ardoyne Residents Association (CARA) was ignored completely by the commission.
These events – reinforced by this week’s successful motion in the Northern Ireland Assembly – validate the view of the Orange family and wider unionism that the Parades Commission is not fit for purpose and must leave the stage forthwith.
Grand Lodge has confirmed it will actively participate in the Haass initiative, with a view to replacing this fundamentally flawed system with a better regulatory process.
We will approach this process with a positive mindset, building on the work of the Institution’s internal Parades Advisory Committee and ongoing discussions with our partners in the Unionist Forum.
I trust the views of the vast Protestant parading sector, including the seven other Loyal Orders and bands community, will also be taken into account.
Let there be no doubt, the Orange Institution is committed to playing its role in making Northern Ireland a better place for everyone. All we ask for in return is respect and tolerance for our culture and traditions.
