éirígí: ancora molestie da parte della PSNI

Nell’ennesima dimostrazione della prosecuzione delle molestie ed intimidazioni portate dalla PSNI nella Contea di Tyrone, un membro di Relatives for Justice (RFJ), un gruppo che promuove campagne di informazione per conto delle vittime della violenza di stato britannica, è stato recentemente fermato e trattenuto mentre viaggiava attraverso la rotonda di Ballygawley.

Martin Mallon, che siede nel consiglio direttivo di RFJ, era accompagnato dal signor Sherry, un uomo di 65 anni sofferente di cuore.

Gli agenti della polizia hano sequestrato gli effetti personali di Mallon, tra cui il telefono cellulare, il diario e varie scartoffie. Quindi hanno cercato di prendere il cellulare di Sherry, il quale inizialmente ha rifiutato di lasciarlo perché doveva essere contattato dal suo medico o dall’ospedale per informazioni sulle condizioni del suo cuore. Mallon ha perciò chiuso le porte dell’auto mentre si è messo in contatto con un avvocato della zona ed un politico, i quali hanno chiamato un membro importante della PSNI. Nonostante tutto, gli agenti sono riusciti ad aprire la macchina e hanno effettuato il sequestro del cellulare di Sherry. Questo oggetto, insieme a quelli sequestrati a Martin Mallon, devono ancora essere restituiti. Secondo Relatives for Justice, “Sherry è stato trasportato in ambulanza al Craigavon Hospital come conseguenza diretta dell’incidente. Attualmente è sottoposto a maggiori medicazioni”.

Martin Mallon, coinvolto in numerose e fondamentali battaglie legali riguardanti l’attacco della sua abitazione da parte di lealisti nel 1994, è stato a lungo oggetto delle molestie della RUC/PSNI. Prima dell’attacco del 1994, in cui sua moglie venne ferita e la 76enne Roseanne Mallon fu uccisa, Martin fu trattenuto in una strada di campagna da membri armati dello Special Branch della RUC. Durante la sua detenzione, due importanti assassini unionisti, tra cui Billy Wright, giunsero sulla scena, parlarono con i membri della RUC e minacciarono Martin Mallon prima di andarsene.

Tre settimane dopo, la casa di Mallon vene assalita dalla UVF. In seguito Mallon vinse la causa legale intentata contro il ministero della Difesa britannico e ottenne il “ritrovamento di una dichiarazione” fatta da soldati britannici presenti nelle vicinanze di casa sua al momento dell’attacco. I soldati in questione dichiararono di aver trasmesso le immagini in diretta dell’attacco a Mahon Barracks, a Portadown, utilizzando una telecamera di sorveglianza ma gli venne ordinato di “spegnere le telecamere” e “non reagire”.

Di recente, la famiglia Mallon ha partecipato ad oltre 20 udienze preliminari nel tentativo di insediare un’inchiesta sulla morte di Roseanne Mallon e sugli eventi che la circondarono. Comunque, l’ex comandante della polizia Hugh Orde si rifiutò si assistere il coroner in alcun modo e minacciò di richiedere una sentenza di imbavagliamento della questione, sottoforma di certificati di Public Interest Immunity (Immunità per Interesse Pubblico).

Dopo l’incidente di questi giorni, il segretario generale di éirígí Breandán Mac Cionnaith ha affermato: “E’ chiaro che la PSNI non vuole confrontarsi con l’eredità della collusione in Irlanda – a causa della sua determinazione ad evidenziare i collegamenti tra la RUC-PSNI e le squadre della morte lealiste, Mallon è nuovamente divenuto oggetto delle molestie della PSNI. Questo esempio è un’altra prova di come la PSNI sia lontana dall’essere una forza di polizia comunitaria, ed infatti è connessa ai soliti metodi repressivi.

“L’agenda britannica in Irlanda resta sempre la stessa, e le politiche di collusione e copertura della verità che stanno dietro agli omicidi di cittadini come Roseanne Mallon sono ancora in pieno funzionamento”.

PSNI Harass Victims Campaigner

In yet another example of continuing PSNI harassment and intimidation in County Tyrone, a member of Relatives for Justice [RFJ], a group that campaigns on behalf of victims of British state violence, was recently stopped and detained while travelling towards the Ballygawley Roundabout.

Martin Mallon, who sits on RFJ’s board of directors, was accompanied at the time of the incident by a Mr Sherry, a 65 year-old man who suffers from a serious heart condition.
The PSNI officers set about seizing Mr Mallon’s personal effects, which included his mobile phone, diary and paperwork. They then attempted to seize Mr Sherry’s mobile phone, which he initially refused to surrender owing to the fact he needed to contact his doctor or the hospital should an emergency relating to his heart condition arise. Mallon proceeded to lock the doors of the car while he contacted a local solicitor and politician, both of whom contacted a senior member of the PSNI. Nevertheless, the officers concerned gained access to the vehicle and seized Mr Sherry’s mobile phone. This item, along with the items taken from Martin Mallon, have yet to be returned. According to Relatives For Justice, “Mr Sherry was admitted to Craigavon Hospital by ambulance as a direct result of the incident. He is currently being administered increased medication.”

Martin Mallon, who has been involved in a number of landmark legal battles concerning a unionist attack on his family home in 1994, has long been the subject of RUC-PSNI harassment. Prior to the 1994 attack, in which his wife was injured and 76-year-old Roseanne Mallon killed, Martin Mallon was detained on a country road by armed members of the RUC Special Branch. During his detention, two leading unionist assassins, including Billy Wright, approached the scene, chatted with the RUC men and threatened Martin Mallon before driving off.

Three weeks later, Mallon’s home was attacked by the UVF. Mallon subsequently won a court case against the British Ministry of Defence and secured a “discovery of statement” from covert British soldiers who were present in the vicinity of the family home at the time of the attack. The soldiers in question stated that live footage of the attack was transmitted to Mahon Barracks, Portadown via surveillance camera but they were ordered to “switch off cameras” and “not to react”.

Recently, the Mallon family have attended over 20 preliminary hearings in an attempt to establish an inquest into the murder of Roseanne Mallon and the events surrounding it. However, former PSNI chief constable Hugh Orde refused to assist the coroner in any way and threatened to invoke gagging orders in the form of Public Interest Immunity certificates.

After the incident, éirígí general secretary Breandán Mac Cionnaith said: “It is clear that the PSNI have no wish to face up to the legacy of collusion in Ireland – because of his determination to expose the long-established links between the RUC-PSNI and the unionist death squads, Mr Mallon has again become the target of PSNI harassment. This example is but further evidence of how the PSNI is far removed from a community police force, and instead is as devoted to the methods of repression as ever.

“The British agenda in Ireland remains the same, and the policies of collusion and covering-up the truth behind the murders of citizens like Roseanne Mallon are still in full effect.”
