Nelle ultime settimana Short Strand è stata oggetto di numerosi e premeditati attacchi da parte dei paramilitari unionisti. Si tratta della peggior serie di violenze contro l’enclave nazionalista di Short Strand dal prolungato assedio del 2002.
Dozzine di abitazioni sono rimaste danneggiate durante questi intensi attacchi e le famiglie sono state traumatizzate, con bambini che non volevano più far ritorno alle proprie case. In particolare, in una famiglia abitante dove gli attacchi sono stati più frequenti ci sono stati alcuni membri che hanno sofferto di malattie mentali e psichiche – si può solo immaginare come queste persone stanno lottando per far fronte a tutto questo. La PSNI ha risposto con la solita tattica fallimentare di arrivare velocemente nell’area per giocare a gatto e topo con i giovani residenti. Va da sé che se la situazione continuerà così qualcuno resterà gravemente ferito o ucciso.
Mentre la comunità accoglie con favore la solidarietà e il sostegno da altre zone di Belfast, questo purtroppo ha portato ad alcuni elementi indesiderati a recarsi nella nostra comunità per compiere azioni che non sono nel miglior interesse dei nostri residenti. Come è accaduto in passato i residenti locali hanno messo da parte i partiti politici unendosi per il bene comune di tutte le persone della zona.
Per affrontare questa situazione i lavoratori comunitari sono stati impegnati con gli organi statutari e con i politici per cercare di far cessare questi attacchi. La colpa degli ultimi attacchi è della brigata di East Belfast dell’UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force), che stanno alimentando disordini per distogliere l’attenzione dalle loro attività criminali.
Nelle prossime settimane dobbiamo stare spalla a spalla in solidarietà con i nostri vicini. È di fondamentale importanza in questo momento pericoloso, e mentre gli attacchi contro la nostra comunità continuano quasi quotidianamente ogni notte, che i genitori dei bambini si assicurino che i figli non sono vicino alle zone di interfaccia.

SHORT STRAND UNDER CONTINUED ATTACK
Over the past couple of weeks the Short Strand has been subjected to sustained and premeditated attacks by unionist paramilitaries. This is the worst violence to hit the Short Strand since the prolonged sectarian siege of 2002.
Dozens of homes were damaged during these sustained attacks and families have been left traumatised with some young children not wanting to return to their homes. One particular family living on the front line of the attacks has several members who suffer from mental and physical illnesses – you can imagine how these people are struggling to cope. The PSNI have responded with their usual failed tactic of speeding through the area, playing cat and mouse with the local youth. It goes without saying that if the present situation continues someone will be seriously injured or killed.
Whilst the community welcomes the solidarity and support from other parts of Belfast, this unfortunately has led to some unwanted elements coming into our community to carry out actions which are not in the best interest of our residents. As has happened in the past local residents have set party politics aside to unite for the common good of all the people in the area.
In terms of addressing this situation community workers have been engaging with the relevant statutory bodies and politicians to bring this situation to an end. The blame for these latest attacks on our community lies with the UVF of East Belfast who are stoking up sectarian unrest to deflect attention away from their own criminal activities.
Over the next number of weeks we need to stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with our neighbours. It is also vitally important at this dangerous time, and as attacks on our area continue on an almost nightly basis, that parents of young children ensure that the children are nowhere near the interface areas.
