Dissident republican pressure group Éirígí has said that it will stand two candidates in Belfast in May’s council elections.

The group said that it would also stand three candidates in Dublin, one of which is sitting councillor Louise Minihan, who quit Sinn Fein two years ago, as well as two candidates in Wexford and one in Wicklow. In Belfast, Máire Drumm will stand in the Colin ward and Pádraic Mac Coitir will contest the Black Mountain ward.

Éirígí, which describes itself as a “socialist republican party”, said that it may contest other seats.

General secretary) Breandán Mac Cionnaith said that the candidates would provide a republican alternative.
