Elezioni suppletive per il seggio di Iris Robinson a Castlereagh

Nel segno di un cambiamento nel panorama politico, il DUP non è stato in grado di prevenire l’elezione suppletiva per la sostituzione di Iris Robinson nel consiglio una volta dominato da suo marito Peter.
Non è chiaro se l’elezione a Castlereagh si terrà prima delle elezioni generali per Westminster, ma se venisse eseguita prima di maggio sarebbe il primo test elettorale per conoscere l’impatto dello scandalo della Robinson sul risultato del DUP.

Dopo aver deciso di rimuovere la Robinson dal DUP e di prendere le distanze dalle sue azioni, ma nell’ultima riunione in consiglio ha apparentemente modificato la sua strategia sulla questione, accusando i mezzi di comunicazione di pubblicare “calunnie e invenzioni” riguardanti “l’unica indiscrezione” della Robinson.

Il partito ha anche rivelato che Iris Robinson si trovava in ospedale per un’osservazione di 24 per prevenire il suicidio.

L’unico Robinson presente all’incontro era il figlio della coppia, Gareth, il solo membro della famiglia rimasto nel consiglio di Castlereagh.

Prima e durante la seduta del consiglio, ha riso e parlato con il collega del DUP Jimmy Spratt, mentre ha scosso la testa quando l’ex consigliere DUP Charlie Tosh e la veterana dell’Alliance Party Geraldine Rice affermavano che l’elettorato doveva dire la sua per mezzo di un’elezione suppletiva.

Il DUP ha cercato di spiegare che ci sarebbe stato un grande spreco di denaro, ma il consigliere Tosh ha ribattuto, affermando che i soldi erano molti meno di quanto speso dai politici del DUP.

Spratt, il capogruppo DUP nel consiglio, ha proposto la lavoratrice comunitaria Sharon Skillen per subentrare nel seggio vacante della Robinson.

Ha altresì respinto le voci provenienti dalla stampa, mai chiarite a suo tempo dal DUP, secondo le quali la Robinson era stata espulsa dal partito.

Senza far riferimento alla serie di gravi affermazioni sulla condotta della Robinson, Spratt ha detto che la donna si era dimessa dal consiglio di Castlereagh “a causa di problemi di salute”.

E ha affermato anche che l’ex parlamentare della circoscrizione di Strangford era ancora membro del DUP giorni dopo le rivelazioni del programma BBC Spotlight, nonostante i rapporti che parlavano di espulsione dal partito.

“Se qualcuno afferma che la Robinson non era più membro del DUP quando rassegnò le sue dimissioni, non si tratta della verità”, prosegue.

Comunque alcuni giorni prima delle dimissioni di Iris Robinson dal consiglio di Castlereagh, una “fonte interna al DUP” aveva parlato ad alcuni quotidiani nazionali sull’espulsione della donna: “Non c’è alcuna questione a riguardo – se ne deve andare. Non c’è alcuna simpatia per la sua posizione”.

Secondo il consigliere Spratt un’elezione suppletiva potrebbe “aumentare lo stress del personale consiliare”.

By-election for Iris’s seat

IN a sign of the changing political landscape, the DUP was last night unable to prevent a by-election for Iris Robinson’s seat on the council which her husband, DUP leader Peter Robinson, once dominated.
It is unclear whether the Castlereagh by-election will be held before the general election but if it were to take place before May the poll would be the first electoral test of the impact which the Robinson scandal has had on the DUP.

Having initially decided to remove Mrs Robinson from the DUP and distance itself from her actions, the party yesterday appeared to change strategy on the issue, accusing the media of publishing “smear and invention” about Mrs Robinson’s “one indiscretion”.

The party also revealed that Mrs Robinson is on 24-hour suicide watch in hospital.

The only Robinson present at last night’s meeting was the couple’s son, Gareth, who is now the sole member of the family on the council.

Before and during last night’s meeting he laughed and chatted to fellow DUP councillor Jimmy Spratt, shaking his head as former DUP councillor Charlie Tosh and veteran Alliance councillor Geraldine Rice said they believed the electorate should have their say in a by-election.

The DUP argued that the money would have paid for a third of a park but Councillor Tosh said that the money was a but fraction of that claimed in expenses by DUP politicians.

Councillor Spratt, who is the DUP group leader on the council, proposed community worker Sharon Skillen for Mrs Robinson’s vacant seat.

He also rejected Press reports, which the DUP did not clarify at the time, that Mrs Robinson had been expelled from the party.

Making no reference to the series of serious allegations about Mrs Robinson’s conduct, Councillor Spratt said that Mrs Robinson had resigned from the council “due to health-related issues”.

And he said that the former Strangford MP was still a member of the DUP several days after the BBC Spotlight revelations about her conduct, despite reports that Mrs Robinson had been expelled by the party.

“If anyone claims Mrs Robinson was no longer a member of the DUP at the time when her resignation was announced, that is indeed not true,” he said.

However, several days prior to Mrs Robinson’s resignation from Castlereagh council, a “DUP source” briefed several national newspapers about Mrs Robinson’s expulsion: “There was no question about it – she had to go. There was no sympathy for her position.”

Councillor Spratt also claimed that a by-election would cause “increased stress to council staff”.
